Ok…I stated above that I have never cared about the way the trailer looks, but after a nudge from @roma042987 i followed his advice and brushed a little paint on the frame prior to loading the wood on her. Good news is I like the look…bad news is I will now be buying some new white trailer rims. Also realized the spring bushings have to be shot. I’m not familiar with what they used originally but there’s a ton of slop. Gonna research this and update things in that area. Will repack the bearings and since I rewired the trailer last year I’m thinking this will basically be like a brand new trailer once I’m done :). Still need to clean up the angle iron and weld it on to cap off the back of the trailer.

looks great, mine is overdue for the same. Debating a refresh vs selling and upgrading to 8-lug

I’ve thought about the same thing as far as a bigger trailer. Then I’d have one that could pull my tractor. My pickup has a gooseneck hitch as well. At the end of the day they are crazy expensive vs the $2k I paid for this one in 2000 and it carries the cruisers just fine.

6 lug is plenty for cruiser fetching. Clearly Jimmy more are in the cards still.

Add 8-10 ply radial tires and add brakes to the other axle.

Good call Rob. My rear tires are 10 ply (a couple years old) and the front tires are recent warranty replacements from discount. Unfortunately they no longer carry 10 ply in my size so these are 8 ply. Never thought about brakes on both axles. Would that primarily be incase one axle failed?

Makes sure you can stop! I found out my new trailer only had brakes on one axle. Sucked coming down I70 over the Rockies. Lucky I had a Duramax and Allison combo to help slow it. I installed brakes on the other axle the weekend after I got home! Makes a huge difference in stopping power with a 5k plus load. Jad to look up federal regulations. Only brakes on one axle under 10k gvw. I also found a blown hub seal from someone over greasing zerk fitting on axle bearings, so really only had one wheel braking over the way over mnts in CO, KY, WV, and VA on way home. Would have hated to be in. 1/2 ton truck.
I had it out last weekend on a local run in the mnts of VA and the new stopping power is night and day. Highly suggest doing it. Helps too if you have a blow out on brake axle. You have 3 more to help stop.

Jimmy if it's not too late, you should either add some tail light guards or mount some flush mount lights. They are super cheap and won't be susceptible to getting busted up. I've also come to realize that having some marker (orange) lights on the front corners or fenders is really great for night hauling.

Too late Roma. I welded the rear cap on for the boards and I’m done welding with this project. Happy enough with how she sits. Also put 4 wood to metal screws per board in her. Drilled pilot holes from the bottom. My shoulders feel it right now. Will look into doing new leaf spring bushings, repack the bearings and possibly buy new rims. Other than that it will get a tarp thrown on it until it’s called into duty.

Jimmy there is a big rig tire shop on I-10 that will powder coat rims for about $25 each. Only option is black or white. That may be a better deal than new. I am pretty sure it’s T&W tire.

Diesel/engine oil 50/50. After it dries out. It will preserve it like no other…. Uncovered. Water just beads. Does not stay oily.

This is what I was thinking.
Speed rating of the tire is also important, a lot of trailer tires are only rated for 72 MPH. or less
With brakes on all 4 wheels on my trailer the truck stops better with the big Camper on and the trailer hooked up. Even with the Cruiser on it.
The 10 ply tires I'm running are speed rated for 86 MPH and made in America.

Unfortunately, I only see 5 lugs = two 3500 LB axles.
Trailer is probably around 1800 - 2000 LBs empty
So with a cruiser on there it's close to maxed or with a 80 on there overweight 🤷‍♂️

If one is already getting new rims adding breaks to one axle, your not far away from just upgrading to 6 lug 5k axles. Then you basically have all new running gear/ trailer.

Damn…spending my money :). These are excellent ideas and will give serious consideration to. Coop @samc2447 also recommended greasable shackles (ore whatever they are called) which I will be doing.

Fu*k!!! Never realized or thought to service the shackles and pins before this refresh process I’m doing. Replaced with new hardware. Sorry Coop @samc2447 but I had to cheap out. Went with standard but I did upgrade to greasable pins. Did not realize I would not get bushings for the spring side of the shackle in the kit. Will see if I can order those and slip them in.
Not sure I would have gotten away with another trip out of these.

Well used Jimmy! Timing is right. Would had a few close calls ahead! Greasable pins is a huge upgrade compared to what you had!
