What sound is low range supposed to make?

Yesterday I decided to get into some soft sand to test out my low range and it had a wining noise that increased with speed, it wasn't that loud but i wonder if this noise is normal? I had been in a friends 200 series that made an even louder wining sound in low range.
If it makes a difference my 100 series is part time 4wd

That is just the difference between spur gears (Lo) and helical gears (Hi). Spur gears are stronger but noisy at speeds.

Correct, I guessed it was just the sound of straight cut gears used for strength when I heard it

I agree, there is a change in gear whine when you go 4lo.
