Hi guys

I got an about 180'000km old H55F in my 1993 HZJ75 pickup that pops out 2nd gear when going over a speed bump or offroading.
What type of overhaul kit should I buy for it? Or what should I change to fix this?
The nylon bushing is already new, it didn't help!
The passenger cabin was lifted about 2-3cm, not sure if that is the problem, although I don't see why it should be.
I ask because I read about this once...
Anyway, would this kit have everything I need or what else do I need?

And should I also replace the throw out bearing? It got about 50-60'000km on it...

Thank you

Michel

These units don't usually pop out of 2nd gear. Check for shifter / boot / body panel interference. Try removing the boot and driving around to see what hits and what doesn't, and if the problem goes away.

If it is that part, you have to replace the 1st/2nd gear shift hub as a unit. Also, check that the top cover detents and ball/springs are properly sized and not worn out.

Always replace the pilot and release bearings if you're opening things up and they are some moderate mileage on them.

John, thank you.

I will do that and remove the rubber boot etc. and drive like that to check it out!

With gear shift hub you mean the hub that the fork runs on? 1st gear never pops out.
If it's only that ball/spring, that would be easy. I MIGHT be able to remove the top cover without removing the trans since the body is lifted about 1"?

Not to hijack the thread, but one of our members HJ 60 with same transmission has issues with it popping out of 5th gear. It stays in as long as he is appling power or cruising, pops out if he foot of the pedal?? Any ideas on what this is, I was thinking Linkage??

detent ball and spring is likely the problem, and is common for the H55f.

To the OP, if you have a body lift it could be that the sheet metal is pressing on the shifter, I had a similar issue with my t-case shifter and a body lift once upon a time.

as said, he should replace the nylon bushing on top. I did that in about 15min... but 5th gear sounds more like the trans needs an overhaul from what I read! It seems that this is the weak link of those transmissions!
On mine it's the 2nd gear, that's weird... I also don't hear or feel a click on 1st or 2nd gear like I do on all gears when engaging (with engine off to hear better) so I also GUESS it could be that ball or the spring that is too weak.
A guy told me today, that Toyota also sometimes did the holes where the spring of that detent ball is too deep and the spring would then be even less weak. So I will check all that and see what I find!

I will try if I can remove the top cover without removing the trans by only lowering it on the rear (removing crossmember first) with a jack. I hope I can with the 1" body lift!

Thanks for the hints!

Yes,there is a washer or bush,I forget which, but when worn it alows 5th gear to move around. It can be a symptom of a gearbox that has towed heavy loads in 5th or has been driven hard in 5th.
Fith gear is really only for cruising on level ground

ok, for the record if anyone later has the same problem:

I rented a home here at Lago Atitlan in Guatemala for a few weeks so I had some time!

I removed the tunnel cover on my HZJ75 and could remove the H55F cover pretty easy. About 1h of work and you got the whole cover with the forks out.
I put now 2 little washers below the ball/spring setup so that the gear stays better when in gear.
I also bend the gear shift lever so it wouldn't touch the seat anymore (it was touching it veeery slightly, but that surely also helped to push the gear out when doing offroad)
I drove 400km so far, also over lots of topes and some nasty roads, the 2nd gear stayed always in gear! I guess problem is solved!
