I just learned that it has a 3L diesel- does that sound right? They are all over the country...the interior is almost identical to the 75 series ambulance/troopy...I am trying to find reviews/more info...thanks again

If 3L then its a LJ79

Non turbo gutless engine

Hi Nica
The model you are looking at is either a (LJ78 / 2.4TD From 1990 to 1993) or an (KZJ78 / 3.0TD from 1993 to 1996)
The first few letters and numbers on the chassis and vin plate will tell you the exact model.

Example; LJ78 L is type of engine 2.4 TD. J is for Jeep a Generic term 7 is for 70 series. and 8 is for LWB light duty.

That LWB shell was used on both light duty 78s and heavy duty 77s from 1990.

Hope this helps

If you see steam rising from the engine bay and smell antifreeze it's a 2L-TE powered LJ78. :D

The 3L diesel is very common in australia but is found only in the Hilux and Hiace here . Its reliable enough .My friend has one in his Hilux with 320000 klms and its still going strong. Its spends much of it life towing a trailer.
Not a powerhouse but it does the job if you are patient.
As you have noticed it shares the dash with all 7* series of that era. They didn't change them until 2010 when the airbag models were introduced.
There are also many other parts that are shared with other landcruisers
I think it will be a LJ79 possibly with a 4sp.
A lot of countries got the KZJ7* models with the 1KZ T engine ,particularly Europe and Japan ,while others got the 3L which was the 2L upgraded

The Red Cross used a lot of these in SE Asia for aid projects.

It has a shorter nose than the leaf sprung models like the 75 series.
