I've been lucky probably but I use lifting straps, the 3" wide ones that you use to lift things off of trucks. I worked for a contractor a few years back and when the safety guy would visit he would check all of our straps. If there was one with the slightest fray on it he would tell us to destroy it. Some how it never got destroyed but ended up in my truck and it works great for pulling/recovery.
Just to make sure I'm following:
Recovery strap: should stretch to take advantage of kinetic energy to 'yank' the other truck
Tow strap: does not stretch.
Sound about right?
The recovery strap I have is 2" X 20', so far, that has been long enough, has an eye at both ends
