I came across this snake at the lake house. I'm figuring brown water snake but I'm no expert. Any snakeatoligist in this group?

Looks a lot like a copperhead, but hard to say. The markings don't look exactly right IIRC. Looks mean, kill it!

Close as I'm getting. I walked around it several times but it never slithered away. He was catchin some rays. He was there when we left.

I did read they can "readily bite", if it is a water snake. Ramon, I leave snakes alone, as long as they leave me alone...

It might be a milk snake, they are safe but i second on the shape of the head, if it makes an arrow kill it.

I agree with Dorton, Brown Water Snake. After looking at a few pictures the colored bands don't connect like a copperhead's do...

It's not a milk snake. It has black squares on its back and a triangle head but a snub nose.

We have a floating dock for the wave runner and last year two of these were always under the cover. You would see a tail, or sometimes not, but they just swam away when you pull the cover off. I was hoping it wasn't a water moccasin or a copperhead.

100% a death adder or tiger snake.

I would have just killed it, the only snakes I leave alone are black snakes, anything else will get the shovel.

I'm with Kenny, the only reason I would kill an animal is for food, or if I know it posses a serious threat to people.

We have 4 little dogs so I don't take the chance of a snake getting ahold of one of them. If they are far enough away from the house ill leave them be but I've killed a few in the house. Not the thing your expecting to find when you come home.

Just FYI...most snake bites happen trying to kill a snake.
They usually only bite (strike) when they feel threatened or are protecting a nest.
I've got a couple of brown water snakes in my fish pond...Mine are only about 15 in long and about 1/2 in. around.
