I have this on my car im not sure what it is, is it part of the night vision system? Im talking about the circular device next to the fog lights. It s to the inside of the fog lights.

They are the infrared lights for the night vision system.

Thanks for the verification. If i get a dissent, or slee front bumper are they compatible or do i lose them?

You’d lose them. So you’d lose the system unless you affixed those to the new bumper or I imagine the rigid industries infrared lights might work.

Welcome to the night vision club!!

I still have stock front bumper and have debated with myself whether or not it would be worth it to keep the system when going to an aftermarket front bumper. I honestly hardly ever use, but I'm not sure I want to give it up either.

It wouldn't matter really.

The "IR emitters" are actually just regular old bulbs with a filter in the projector housing to prevent light other than IR from passing through. The difference between the emitter and your regular headlamps (other than the filter, of course) is simply projection shape - since the filter prevents people from seeing the light, it's projected out with no horizontal cutoff. Your IR camera near the rear view mirror senses IR only (from both the emitters, and any other light source), and displays it on the windshield.

Since all lights emit IR in addition to the light we can see you're really only concerned about projecting light down the road.

I'm not sure if the system functions with the "IR emitters" disconnected. If it does, then you're 100% in the clear. Just swap a new bumper on and you're good. If it doesn't, then you could use the wires previously running to the IR emitters to run a relay, and power your fogs (or something similar to trick the system into thinking there's lights connected)

Bumping up an old thread to brainstorm ideas for making these IR emitters useful for those of us stubborn enough to retain the stock bumper.

In practice I find the night vision system to be useful only when there's no glare from oncoming traffic, so I use it as a "deserted highway" or "off-road use only" feature. Which means that I would rather have those emitters add to the visible light output rather than IR only, functioning as a high beam or aux light.

This appears to be a standard sized H11 halogen projector inside the plastic housing as seen below. Assuming the projector has a coating that doesn't let visible light through (only IR), the best option would be to replace only the projector inside with a HID or LED projector, while retaining the polycarbonate lens and housing. In my mind this would solve any alignment issues and look OEM from the outside.

Any ideas @Luke111, looking to tap into your knowledge about projectors and maybe even goad you to make a retrofit kit ;) for the 10 of us who have this with a stock bumper, LOL.

Hey everyone,

My new to me 2003 LX470 has this option and I tried it the other night, but got a very "unclear" vision on the headsup screen. It was on, but nothing was projected except a green screen and only saw things when I got really close to something on the edge of the road.
What could cause this? Is the system "worn out"?

Thanks!
