At first I thought this was just some aftermarket thing that someone rigged into the truck I just bought, but now I see that it exists in lots of similar year/model rigs.

For example, this is a pic from the web of a 1989 BJ71, I have a 1986 BJ74 and both have this switch. As you can see, this pic actually shows 2 switches, where I only have one.

In any case, mine currently seems to do nothing....

what is it?

Unless you are sitting completely still with the brake pedal firmly pressed, do not activate the switch on the right.

Hello,

It is an auxiliary switch of some kind installed by the PO.

Trace it and delete it if you can.

My 87 Troopy had a switch like that in the same location, it was for some no longer present accessory. I get the impression it's an easy and or convenient spot to mount an auxiliary switch.

My PIAA fog lights were switched at that location. Now I just have the hole.

Could be for po stereo. Direct 12 v feed. Bypass acc because it's 24v. Mine was set up that way. Pull the switch and see where it goes

My Prado had two switches that looked exactly like the one on the right, they were for my IPF lights. They are definitely aftermarket, and I think are a common JDM item.

Switches from Lhd to Rhd

I do have driving lights, but they are hooked up to the fog light switch. I also have a radio that goes through a 24v to 12 v box, but its not apparently linked to this switch (also has no memory).
I'll pull it and see.
thanks all

My 77 Series had enough electrical do-dads / wires to fill a 5 gallon bucket. 99% of the wires went no where.
Fairly common for JDM Cruisers.

I can't even find the friggin' fuse box in this thing. The threads covering this suggest I'm not the only one, but none of the previous mentioned locations turn one up for me. :(

On mine, a previous owner installed a timing retard circuit to help with cold weather starting. But you would hear that whenever the switch was turned on, so that's not what yours does.
