Greeting,
I think I'm finalize on getting a 13B-T to replace my 3B. LMK if you have an idea of a good compression reading( high, low, and average )and what to look for went buying one? Thanx:bounce:

Why not just turbo your 3B or is it toast

Dieseler,
The 3B is perfectly fine. It's not toast or fry. It just I'm in Los Angeles, California. People drive pretty fast here. I mean speed limit 65mile(105km an hour), but that not the case. Most people drive about 70-85mph. Which this 3B on a flat Hwys can do good about 65-70, but up hills that went it start to drop around 55-60mph. I think that become hazardes to drive and went I'm picking speed going to Hwys is a problem. I know most people drive there rig off road and are weekend warrior. This would be more than enough for that. On the other case I just like driving period, any day, anytime went I want to go somewhere around town or off road. I want it to be ready at anytime, that all.

I don't think you should consider a 40-series a 70+ mph vehicle, no matter what engine you put in it.

My BJ42 is my daily driver and traffic is similar up here by San Fran. Been doing it for 2 years now, the attitude adjustment was cheaper than the engine swap. :)

Turbo the 3B to keep you out of trouble and plan a for decent engine swap in the future. The 6 cyls are nicer at higher speeds, but I agree with Armeurer that the 40 is not a high speed vehicle.
It can be made better with decent supension, steering and brake upgrades

I live in the Netherlands, and damn, the roads are insanely busy over here. Speed limit on the highways is 120kph but everyone is doing more like 140+kph. I drive at around 100kph. The 3B likes that speed and it's not chewing too much fuel at that speed.

Everyone blasts past me, but I just stick to the slow lane and let them... As long as I can overtake the big trucks and everything it's fine by me. Never found it dangerous in any way so far..

But yeah, my world turns a lot slower than others in every respect, I'm never in a hurry..:grinpimp:

I agree with Amaurer.

It seems to be very difficult to find anybody with the correct sized fitting to do a compression test on the 13bt. When I was selling my BJ71 I tried unsuccessfully at Toyota and several diesel specialty shops, they all turned me away. If you had a used injector it could be drilled out and made to work though.

Not very helpful are they? I stole this from a post done by G&S cruisers on this web site. Like I said call Sheldon at G&S he can help you.

"Oh ya.. Compression. Contrary to what the 3B/13B-T FSM says (427 for both)
The compression spec on the 13BT and 12H-T is 397psi, min 283 and no more that 28psi difference between cylinders. Greg and I have tested a LOT of 13B-Ts and 12H-Ts and they typically are in the 330-370 psi. Be sure to set the valves before you do a test. And good luck finding a fitting to adapt your gauge to the motor. "

Cheers

Amaurer WOW, I'm amazed how you drive San Fran with all the up hills. Jim, I just found a 15B in Aussie asking price $5,500. Any reason why not the 15B-T and what should I look for on this 15B? Also will it just bolt on my H55 5 spd. I found one topic on Mud saying there were somthing different on tranny.

Dispute! Dispute! Dispute!

Not about the fact that a 40 isn't a high-speed vehicle ....but

I don't believe ANYONE can achieve better on-road handling than I've got with STOCK suspension, STOCK steering and STOCK brakes!

Haha, have you driven your 3B or not?! :D There is no problem with hills at city speeds, a 3B pulls like a horse! As you said, however, hills on the highway definitely slow you down - in fact to be safe you need to be going slower than you say you are; I'm guessing you don't have a pyro gauge .

I never go over 60mph and I've never been out of the right hand lane. If a trip involves long highway stretch thats the worst case and it takes 20% longer to get where I'm going - and I find that just doesn't matter in practice.

Good on you a 15B would be great, I don't know how it fits up, I do know you want to find a 15BT as the IP on the 15B doesn't have a boost compensator so a turbo install would be complicated. I assume you would want to turbo the 15B if not than go for it. Have to do some searching to figure out the tranny. Someone on MUD knows maybe you can get them to share that info.
