I’ve always wanted one, but until now couldn’t justify getting one.

Anyway I found this one:

"I have a real nice 1971 Gmc short bed pick up for sale 115K miles and runs like new. Truck is all original except for wheels and 3" lowering kit. The truck is probably the nicest original truck around. there is vertually no rust except a little on the drivers door. The truck is a daiy driver or would be an above average cantadate for restoration. Please dont waste my time with low ball offers and I am not looking to trade anything for it. I am asking $6250 which I think is very fair for a truck in this shape. It also has a 350 invader motor. Motor and tranny are matching #'s."

I called the guy and he said he has the original protectoplate, a power brake booster, new door weather stripping.
He also said it has no leaks except on the power steering-Possible hose issue he says.
It’s the Sierra Grand edition with holly intake & carb.
What do you guys think?

Other than the color looks like a pretty sweet truck. I've always preferred the stepside, but each to their own.

Shortbeds definitely fetch a higher premium. Truck starting to become sought after and collectible. A ton of repro parts available, and pretty cheap, too.
That doesnt seem like too bad a price. I have seen Chevy shorts hit 9-10k easy in worse condition.

My dad bought a '72 chevy in '77 for $1800 with 70k miles. It was the top of the line Cheyenne Super with the groovy wood grain interior. He sold it in '93 with 225k miles for $3500 miles. It was a 1/2 ton long bed 2wd and wasn't as clean as that one anymore. It was still in good shape, but showing it's age. The only complaint is that they love gas and the cab is small, so if you are really tall, you may find it confining. Very solid trucks, look/check for slop in the rear suspension if it has the coils. The bushing on the panhard rod and the locating bars at the cab wear out and get sloppy. Other than that, not much excellent trucks, probably GM's last great ones.

Everyone in my family has had at least one. Even my wife had one when we first met. We both still have a soft spot for them. I pretty much grew up around them.

I like the lowering kit that’s on it. It will save me some $$. Not crazy about the paint, but you don’t see many that color, so that’s a plus I guess. The wheels are new too.
I’ve only talked to the guy over the phone; it’s about 7 hrs away. Ive looked at the junk here in Albq, and I mean it's junk! This one guy had a ’72 with a 396 BB, and the ad made it sound near perfect. When I got there it looked like it had white house paint that was stripped using paint remover & a scrapper. The engine was a total hack job- the valve cover was hitting the firewall (a dollar bill couldn’t fit between them). The floor had a hole cut in it for an old floor shifter too. The guy was asking $4700 for it.

Do you think the GMC’s are as good as the Chevy’s & what about the Sierra Grand model? Is it a good one? (I’ve never heard of it).
The Sierra Grand emblem on the rear fender must go! (IMO).

No real difference...pricing varies so much depending on area....It is weird, I like GMCs better on some years, Chevy in others.

A buddy of mine completely disassembled a 72, that had factory tach in the dash, etc....was a big block shorty....totally restored it...spent about 22K and 4 years of labor.... Those things are beautiful when done right. He sold it to a Chevy truck magazine in Ca....

I have no idea what he's talking about with the invador motor

The Invader motor is what I think is available with the Sierra Grand edition . my friend has the same motor in his 71 GMC Suburban.
Does anyone know about these? Do they have more power?

I've had a '68 chevy and now a '72 GMC. They all rust in the rockers and cab corners and sometimes in the lower doors. I prefer a truck to look and function like a truck (long bed, standard height, etc.), but lots of people prefer the short, step side and lowered.

Is it an AC truck? There are tons of 67-72s in Idaho for reasonable prices. I wouldn't pay $6250 for one unless it was in excellent shape. I paid $1200 for my 72, and it's an original Sierra Grande big block truck with AC and no rust. They are cool trucks.

I talked to the guy the guy last night. He said it in excellent shape runs and drives perfect he has a set of headers, power booster, chrome alternator bracket, and new door seals that go with the car. As mentioned it is lowered, but not slammed.
I think the price is kind of high but, it’s allot better shape than others Ive looked at. The lower molding is MIA though, but that’s been the norm so far. I’m going to look at it/get it next Saturday. But I’ll keep my eye open until then. Post any links you know of. Thanks!
PS what about the Invader motor? Its it just a name on the same ‘ol Chevy? More HP???

I'll take the emblems if you pull them off.

My wife's '69 factoy big block 3/4 ton (same color) is missing them.

What are you going to do with the truck?

I have a 67 GMC 3/4 ton 2wd lwb with a Knaphied flat bed. It has the 292 6cylinder and some crazy low geared 4 speed. I bought it from the original ownerfor $1,200. It's not a show queen, It's my farm truck.

I also have a 68 GMC 3/4 ton 2wd lwb with a stepside bed and the small back window. It has the 292 6cylinder and the same crazy low geared 4 speed. It has factory auxillary fuel tanks. It's not a show queen, It's my other farm truck.

I have a 72 Chevy Sierra Gande 3/4ton (with dually's) 4X4 long bed. It has wood grain everything, factory air, etc. I bought it from the original owner for $1,500. Since it still has most of the factory chrome it would do it justice to treat it to a good paint job. It's not a show queen, it's my tow rig and support vehicle for my FJ40, FJ40.5 and CJ-8. I just put a stahl utility bed on it so I could keep all my tool and parts in one spot. Metric Tools and parts on the passenger side and non-metric tools and parts on the drivers side. I wheel with a 4wdrive club so most of the parts from everybody gets thrown in some were. I have everything from altenators and axles for jeeps that I don't even own.

I also have a 72 GMC 1-ton 2wd long horn. It has a little longer wheel base than the regular long bed model. It has a Douglas flat bed on it righ now. I'm in the proccess of putting a dump kit under the bed and a 1990 5.9L Cummins under the hood. It wil be my back up farm truck and back up tow rig.

Like Cruiserman said, they all rust in the same spot. Check the rocker panels to see if they are bondo'ed or have been replaced. Check the bottom rear of the front fender for the same as well as the bottom of the doors. New door shells are $250 each, fenders are around $170 each. Rocker panels, floor boards and cab corners are dirt cheap.

That truck, like anything, is only worth what two people decide on. If i was going to pay 6k for an old style Chevy/ GMC it better be a 4x4 riding on 33", in mint condition and come with a warranty since that's more than the truck cost new.

1972 1/2 ton 4x4 on 35'5

Here is a pic of an original 72 1/2ton 4x4 with a fresh engine a guy in Reno who has had this for sale for almost 2 years. it has the orignial wood bed in it as well. He wants 5k for it and has had no takers. The white thing on the side of the bed is a chrome fuel cap cover.
