What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Spent last week in the north Georgia mountains with the family including three separate off-road outings in my 95. What was even more impressive is the ole cruiser made the 6.5hr drive each way (albeit very slowly), without a hitch. My 6yo went with me for the trail fun and served as camera girl and occasionally as the spotter. While we didn’t really get the best parts of the trail on film, we did get a few where possible.
My intention was to try and ride all the trails at Beasley Knob but the first day we went, the trails were closed due to recent rain. We went instead the first day to Carolina Crawlers off-road park, a privately owned place near Blairsville. The next day Beasley opened up and we were able to do all of the trails (except the toughest trail) over a couple of days. It was still pretty muddy and we had to winch through 3 sections at Beasley but we had a great time. I’m thinking some 37s and 4.88s (and a spotter!) before the next visit will help keep the winch line on the spool!

I really liked the idea of a window rocket but it goes where I mounted the fuse panel so I decided I would rather not relocate the fuse panel and forgot about having fast windows. Then after seeing all the reviews I decided I could make it work with some long standoffs from McMaster Carr. The holes all lined up so it was easy. Fast windows and an aux fuse panel. Solid mount so far.

Nicely done…. and you will enjoy those fast windows 👍

That module is a bit pricey, but the fast windows (and ease of installation) quickly help you forget the cost.

What's the name of that window unit?

Tetons and Yellowstone!
Nearly had a major feck up - second time over the Tetons pass and zoned out - no engine braking - nearly lost it. Had to pull over and let brakes cool down for 30 mins - thought I’d warped my rotors. Gingerly got down into Wilson and then to Jackson - went out the next day to test out brakes and thank god no warped rotors - felt like an idiot - learning lesson!
Forgot how steep the pass was and the impact on brakes - 10% grade - 2000 feet or so drop in 5 miles….

Certainly no an 80 but happened into this one owner dealership only maintained 06 DC tundra with 132k. My initial thoughts were to possibly turn it over in the spring to help fund a turbo but after some seat time this rig it’s really solid, very punchy and even quick off the line, something I can’t accuse my 80 of, and silky sooth. Now will plan to use as an adventure “overland” rig and see how that goes. Also, frame is absolutely spotless.

I had an 2006 Limited DC Tundra back in 2006 and it was a great truck I really feel like the interior quality was nicer than a modern Tundra. The modern Tundra everything looks cheap.

Sold my FGT to buy my 80…really wish I still had the truck (and the 80 of course!). Nice find!

Yeah, it’s definitely better than I expected.

Absolutely amazing vehicle.

Interesting thing about the 06 I picked up, it was from an elderly couple and came with a thick file of dealer maintenance. Seems his hobby was taking it in for service as he had the coolant flushed, all front, rear and transfer case oil changed about every regular oil change. Timing belt done at 92k and then again along with water pump at 125k. Crazy particular OCD with maintenance.

No service records, just pinch yourself clean ;)

Well, it's been almost 5 years since I started taking my cruiser apart to do a full restoration. It took me about a year to get everything completely disassembled, and then has mostly just sat around in a million pieces the last 4 years. Fortunately I made a new friend that loves off-roading & is a diesel mechanic at a local mine so very experienced and has tools galore. He has nobody to go on trips with and is very willing to help me get this thing put back together. I'm giving myself 1 year from today to get it back together and running. If by 10/17/26 it's not done, I will be putting the whole thing up on ebay for a no reserve auction. So that way I have a little motivation lol. Wish me luck! 😂

Looks like you’re missing a few pieces 😜

Sunroof trim matching day…. Tedious but totally worth it when getting the new OEM bits in -B0 color code…. I’m ecstatic these parts are even still available.

I was ready to do the same with the new grey sunroof trim that i got for my 95 with oak interior but I changed my mind and left them grey so they match the grey headliner. The trim around the rear hatch window is also grey so I'm not completely convinced the original sunroof trim was tan to begin with but with heat and UV who knows what the original colour was.
