Mission creep

It is easier to install the second row insulation if you remove the wheel we'll carpet. That means removing trim and stuff and might as well remove the cargo carpet. Might as well clean that carpet as well and see if you have enough insulation for the back.

It is there you find where that spilled quart of oil went. :doh:

I'll need to order a yard or two more of thermozite and regular insulation. I can salvage the wheel well carpet. I think I'll price out a replacement for the cargo. It is a mess. It gives me a chance to run the fridge power cord from Joey too!

How difficult is this trail when it's not raining?

Not too difficult normally. I have run it several times with 31" tires in my mini truck. My problem was I couldn't hold a line because the truck kept sliding around on the wet rocks. There are a few spots where you can get pretty hung up in the rocks if you can't stick to your line.

You'd think I was loaded for a month on the Grand Canyon, but in fact it was just a day to Horsetooth Reservoir with the family and some friends.

Rafts, IKs, paddle boards, kids and friends made the packing worthwhile.

Gotta take the plunge.

Little dude is actually asleep on the paddle board.

Donal @ToyotaDon & I finally where able to go wheelin together & it so happened to be the same weekend as the MoonLight Madness Event on Bald Mountain near Shaver Lake, CA

We where able to pre run the loop Friday the day before the other 400 rigs got there the next day. I counted a total of six 80 series rigs up there that weekend.
I had a great time, I slept in the back of the Lx for the 1st time, it work out pretty good.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also finally edited a vid from another trip a ways back that we took earlier this year.
@ToyotaDon & sneaked away from the family for a few hours from a family trip near Hume Lake & got some mild trail time in... Here is the vid.
Got the AC system working for the first time in the 3+ years I've had the truck. Replaced all of the o-rings, receiver drier, expansion valve, clutch bearing, idler bearing, and belt. Now to see how long the charge lasts :cautious:
Bypassed the rear heater with a Gates 5/8" diameter hose that's about 12" long and has a 90* bend formed into it. I searched Mud and found this idea, it works perfectly. The heater valve was also replaced.
Things were going so well I decided to eliminate my not so old PHH by running a single hose from the head up to the heater valve. And since that went so well, I decided to swap the water bypass hose (#1 I believe) that runs from the bottom of the throttle body down to the head with a newer one off my spare engine. That little hose replacement was a big pita!
I also installed a black hub fan clutch that I filled with 15k oil to replace the black hub clutch I was already running with 10k oil.
When I refilled the cooling system, after a bit of research, I decided to stick with a 50/50 coolant mix but this time I dumped in a bottle of Redline water wetter.
On a 25 mile drive at speeds between 65-75, AC on and AC off and ambient temp at 105f I never got above 205f on the Koso temp gauge. Turning the AC off decreased water temps by no more than 5f and slowing to 65 made very a minimal difference also.
Last year I overhauled my cooling system completely, installed the previoulsy mentioned fan clutch, 50/50 coolant mix and no water wetter. At 105F ambient air temp my water temp went as high as 219f under the same conditions.
No doubt the fan clutch is now more agressive but the water wetter is the mystery snake oil. Redline's testing showed an 8f drop in water temp. I was pleased with the lower water temps I was seeing no matter what caused it.
Ran Coney Flats in heavy rain. Amazing scenery with everything all wet and misty. Parts of the trail turned into a small river. No crowds either. Fun times, but the clunker paid the price. Bent radius arm, 2 punctured tires, rear driveshaft took a beating and my whole exhaust relocated itself about 6" forward, breaking all the hangers and unplugging the o2 sensor :eek: I think I convinced myself to finish my TG sliders and get bigger tires now :eek:
When was this? There was a decent amount of people when I was there, but nothing too crazy. Had a few jeeps behind me, a badass Tacoma camping off to the side towards the beginning and an older mini truck that I stopped and talked to. Lots of side by sides too
Picked up a vacuum pump for fluid changes. Did the power steering fluid flush
Sadly my Pela wouldn't work for oil changes.. toyota crimps the dipstick tube down to a pretty small diameter at the bottom and the tube for my Pela wouldn't fit. Yours may be different? Also, not sure whether you've used one of those before.. it helps a LOT for the oil to be hot. Not a big deal for a PS reservoir, but for a 7qt oil pan it can be the difference between 2 minutes and 30. SUPER useful and mess-free where it works though
how do you clean it out as to not mix fluids, or is it just for sucking
Only for extracting the used fluids.
Went on a little drive down the coast and found a few secluded places to camp.
What's that paint color? Desert dune beige? Looks awesome on an 80.
I have the same front bumper and mounted my license plate in the same place. Last week I bent the license plate back (official license plate mod) so it deflects air toward the radiator. I figure it can't hurt mpg's either. :hillbilly:
Not sure where you are in colorado, but I'll be driving through along I-70 coming in from Nebraska at the end of this week on my way to Utah. I have two good radius arms, and I could bring one or both with me and you could have them to replace your bent one. Let me know.
Alternator died, and since it takes 2000 forevers to get anything for the 3FE around here, went ahead and pulled off the smog pump, EGR, and friends to free up some room for a second battery. It's uncanny how well my Wit's End Keychain fits where the EGR went!
Also worth noting:
I found the OEM radiator cap wedged down in that funky electric fan the 91 & 92 came with. Need to order another one!
