I investigated a leaking transfer case and discovered this in the fill port. What the...?

Now I understand the response I got from @cruiserdan a few years ago.


Me: yeah I, uh, need the little rubber gasket thing on the transfer case fill plug.

Dan: do you mean the metal washer?

Me: no it's, um, a rubber thingy.

Dan: (sighing, sound of head shaking) Are you SURE this is on a Land Cruiser?

That washer looks like the washer to a Fluidmaster 400A fillvalve for a toilet.

I wouldn't be surprised. The records show it was serviced at "Steve's Off Road" in Soddy-Daisy Tennessee. No foolin'.
 
Took the Cruiser up to Crystal, Colorado to visit Crystal Mill.

Camped one night by the mill and did some night photography, the shot below of just the mill is a 30 second exposure I did in the dark that was lit up by the moonlight.

then my buddy and I woke up the next morning and did the Lead King Basin Trail.

We had such a blast 4 wheeling together and sight seeing at 11k feet elevation. The trails were rated as easy and were fine to travel through with one vehicle.

yeah its an easy trail. I'm sure bone stock 80 would make it up perfectly fine. don't bother hiking lol

Lol, a bone stock 80 is a pretty damn capable vehicle, especially with lockers. How would a stock height GX470 fair on that trail and Lead King ?

Very true haha. And the GX would be fine. We saw everything from newer stock Jeep Liberties to old school Land Rover Defenders. My buddy swears he saw a mini van at a camp site off of Lead King haha. To be honest nothing was technical, 80% of the trails were just extremely rocky like the 4th photo I posted. I still aired down to 25 psi to be on the safe side.

Wanted to chill out on the beaches of Corolla, NC and try to spot the wild Mustangs...but it rained, and it hailed...but the storm did subsided for a about an hour and we were greeted with this as a spot was chosen to stop and stretch our legs.

The rainbow was quickly disappearing though, so I climbed onto my Prinsu roof rack and tried to hold it in place.

Problem seems to be solved. The adjustment to the fan clutch made a definite difference. Took the truck out yesterday with the camper in tow, and the kayaks on the roof. High 80's the last couple days, I was seeing 215 running up some local hills before. Could not break 200 after the adjustment on the same hills. I'll probably pull it again and tweak it to be a bit less aggressive.
 
Finally got around to getting some rollover protection installed on the 93.

Busted out my grandfather's rivet gun. I've had this for 29 years. No idea how long he had it. Worked perfectly.

Went to our local fireworks show....and while parking on a back road, there was a Jeep in need of some help.

A local had parked her Rubicon too far off the side of the road, was cooking her clutch trying to get it out of a sticky situation. Ends up that her 4wd was not working as it had lost the circlip and the t-case shifter just wobbled about (according to her hubby on the phone). She was dug into the sand quite well, and no way that the rig was getting out on it's own, so I offered to help. Had my wife maneuver our 80 into position and hold the brakes as I worked the winch and guided the Jeep out. Took but a few minutes, and then walked to the park for some BBQ and the show.

Just six months into 2017, and this is the third Jeep I have helped; one was stuck in the snow, one had a dead battery, and now one buried in the sand...I think the 80 has earned one of those Jeep Recovery Vehicle stickers.
 
It has been several weekends but I’m slowly progressing along on my “list”.

In an effort to track down loose steering and driveline slop:
  • Replaced all u-joints front and rear
  • Replaced rear upper control arm bushings (lower had been replaced last year)
  • Replaced rear pinion seal and adjusted play in bearing (2K on it and no leaks so far)
  • Replaced all 4 rod ends up front
  • Tightened center screw on steering box 1 ¼ turns in ¼ turn increments over 1K miles (definite improvement in steering wheel freeplay)

Getting ready for summer towing season and Boy Scout camp
  • Replaced my leaky air Firestone air bags with a new set of Air-Lift bags
  • Attempted to stem valve guide oil leakage by moving from 5W-30 to 15W-40. So far seems to have nearly doubled my interval of needing to add oil (6/700 to 1K+)
Added a set of Centramatic wheel balancers. Tire Balancers, Tire Balancing, Wheel Balancer and Wheel Balancing from Centramatic

I ran these for 60K in the past on a Dodge 2500 with Duratrac 35’s and they made a HUGE difference. On the highway the ride was as smooth as riding on glass, all my front end vibrations went away, and tire life was extended. On the LC I have ST Maxx’s that the tire shop can’t seem to get two of the five to balance perfectly. Spacers are needed to clear the front calipers and, while I’m not sold on the idea of spacers, I must say the ride on the highway is as smooth as silk. The handling is same as before the spacers. I’ll run them through the summer as we have about 6K in highway trips coming up and then reevaluate the spacer thing in the fall.

As far as fun trips…

Two weeks ago I took 26 Scouts canoeing on the upper Delaware river for a 37 mile paddle over four days (in at Callicoon, NY, out at Port Jervis, NY). The LC towed canoe and kayak trailers just fine.

Next week I take 50 Scouts up to Camp Yawgoog in RI for a week of summer camp. The LC will see towing duty bringing our 2700lb troop trailer from NJ/PA up to RI and back.

AND…… Looking forward to taking delivery of my new Costa Fab front winch bumper :bounce::bounce::bounce:.
