Finally reintroduced myself to the "knuckle rebuild project". I haven't done this in 10 years. No, the last time wasn't on this particular cruiser, although as you will soon see it seems none of the POs wanted to do this project.

Judging by the amount of grease around the brake caliper and rotor I am not surprised how s***ty this thing stopped. Stopping on a hill was scary at best.

When I took the spindle off this is what was inside.... nothing, no grease! Hardly anything even dripped out. This cruiser was in serious need of some love and safety improvements.

In addition to the knuckle rebuild, new tie rod ends (parts both via @orangefj45 ), all new brakes for the front and back (via @beno ) and the steering box will be sent to WTOF for a rebuild. Let the fun begin!

I also went boostcontroller.com. I wish I could remember how much of what size but there are other threads here that mention that. But in addition to making some minor bling on an otherwise drab engine bay they sure are easier to see when you need to work on them. Post 1076 on best mods under $50 from a guy that slipped red colored silicon line over his dipstick tube, making it much easier to see. I got to go do that yet, it was a good idea, maybe I'll try white if they have it. Makes the black cat easier to spot as well!View attachment 1301078 View attachment 1301081

I usually order 10' of 5mm and 40' of 3mm and usually have a few feet of each to throw in the rig box for trail repairs/assistance.

Just did that about two weeks ago! Loads of fun! Mine looked about like yours. I found three different types of grease in there. Someone packed the birfields with lithium grease.... I'll have to swap 'em out eventually. I'm in the middle of a clutch job at the moment. I'll post pics when it's all done.

Put on my ultra-budget OME lift. Worked great!

Here's the complete parts list:
- 2 front light-load leafs
- 2 rear light-load leafs
- 2 packs of poly bushings

This worked because none of the factory hardware was *too* rusty to reuse. The factory shocks were also in good shape, and only reduced down-travel by an inch or so in front, and about 1/4" inch in the rear. This would obviously be a problem if I also had longer shackles...

Pictures when I get around to it.

I know its early, but are you getting any noise from the poly bushings yet?

Went to parts store so I could fix my daily driver...ended up having to tow the 60 home. Apparently, the bolt holding the crankshaft pulley came off and that caused the pulley to work it's way partially off of the shaft. When it came time to go home, I cranked it and a lot of noise was heard. I cut it off, lifted the hood and saw the pulley. It was crooked.
That was 2 weeks ago. Today (Sat) I crawled under and it appears the shaft is not bent and the problem is indeed the pulley. I've loosened the belts and in the process of getting the pulley back on the shaft.
Back story...about 2 years ago I found this big bolt in the back yard. I thought it might be from my 60. I checked every place I could think of to see where it might have come from. At the time I had a parts 60 and I just figured it came from that one. So if this bolt is the actual bolt I'm surprised this hasn't occurred before now. I hope the pulley isn't ruined.

Part II
That bolt I found (3 years ago - not 2) is indeed the bolt for the shaft. I removed the pulley and it appears to be straight. I located, what used to be, the Woodruff key. So I guess I need to purchase a new key and reassemble everything. I must admit, I don't know if I should be aggravated with me for not knowing to check the crankshaft bolt as a part of regular maintenance or be aggravated with the shop that did the engine work right after I bought the truck.
I'm assuming the best place to buy a new Woodruff key would be a Toyota dealer?

They might have it. Every time I've gone to Toyota for fj60 parts they look at me crazy. I would call cruiser outfitters and ask if they have any available. Or cruiser parts.

Call Beno.

Speaking of beno, received the new brake parts!

Call Beno.

I ordered stuff from cruiser parts before. Never had a complaint. I've heard/read about Beno. How would I reach him?
Thanks.

@FJ40Jim :

In the last couple weeks:

New Toyota FJ45 1T clutch.

Do you have part #s for this, please :D

How does this differ from the stock FJ60 Clutch / PP ? :hmm:

Searching yields zilch....

Did the McMasters gas strut hood mod.
Cost about $35 for both struts, $5 for a 5/16" tap.
Eliminated the need for the prop rod (though it stays, just in cases) and gets rid of those stupid elbow spring thingies.

Just ordered an oil catch can, and made a blanking plate for the inlet crossover... Only clean fresh air that has gone through my air filter is going to be getting into my engine....

I don't have the PN handy, can get it when I'm in the shop with the Toyota fast mover book.

It is a 3 finger clutch for use w/ heavy e-74 flywheel. The 1ton clutch has higher clamp load than standard FJ40 pressure plate.

The stock fj40 clutch that came out was not grabbing with authority when starting up a hill w/ a loaded trailer in tow. New clutch + lower H55 1st gear will give you whiplash if pedal is not released carefully.
