What back-country radio?

Hey guys,

I am looking to hook up a long range radio system for my FJ60 (TRX1). Just wondering what the global consensus for 2-band, 10 and whatever is out there. Most of my wheeling will be in North and South America. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Ham radio! The further afield you get the better radio you need. In the U.S. a 2m is enough in more remote areas you may want a high frequency ham radio which should let you talk world wide if the conditions are good.

I run an Icom 706Mk2 which is all ham bands in my truck.

Looked it up and there are a lot of YouTube posts on the 706. Looks very good.

I have a Yaesu FT-2800M. It is ruggedized and they use it in the military. It is only 2m but has a 65-watt output. A lot of people have the Yaesu FT-7800R that is 50-watt but is dual-band with 2m and 70cm. I also have a hatch-mount with two antennas - a Comet sbb1-nmo for around town and a Larsen 5/8 whip for out in the back country.

For long distance emergency calls a sat phone might be a better choice. The long distance travelling lower frequency radio may have other problems. This is just speaking from theory. I only have a tech license and not a general license so I can't use those bands yet.

I have a hand-held Yaesu VX-7R. tri-band, dual monitor tough little weatherproof unit.

I was thinking about a handheld for backpacking too. In the end I think I want both. Something high power for TRX1 (Trout Recon Xtreme). But the 706 Icom is pricey!!! Anyone have the 703? Or use the D-Star versions? It would be cool to get post on MUD from the western side of canyon lands!
