Ive always used Toyota Red coolant. Has anti freeze also.

I don't need anti freeze, so i never look at those details. I just buy it knowing its made for the engine.

I don't swap coolant. I use a diesel rated ethylene glycol. Green stuff.

Newer style coolants were not used in these years of cruisers. It would be very hard to swap and get rid of the old.

can i use monoethylen glycol instead of ethylen glycol

A little digging around says its the same thing. Toyota uses polyethylen glucol which means it has a few compounds added to it.
The Toyota red also has lubricants for the water pump.

Hey Rosco
yes for sure for disposal. I actually meant getting rid of the old out of the cruiser. From the rear heater, nooks and crannies of the coolant system. A simple drain won't do it. Even a drain and re-fill with the same only "refreshes" the coolant.

Not sure if you made a decision already on coolant but I recently had my BJ42 in the shop and the shop owner told me to never put Toyota red in these old trucks as there's apparently some harsh additives that will destroy the water pump! He said he's had it happen to several diesels that have come into his shop. I was told to just stick with the Prestone green or a similar eth-glycol green coolant.

Yes, you need to fill and refill a few times and drive it around for a day or 2 before refilling. Pressure washing without the thermo stat and all the heaters turned on should get it out

Anyone else heard this or have experience with it? I just put in a new water pump and used toyota Red. Not sure why toyota red would not be compatible. Anyone running green for a while and can comment on this?

What exactly are the "harsh additives"? .
And what does it mean by "older trucks" . My engine dates back to 1990(mine is a 95) and I use Toyota Red as recommended. But Toyota also made B engines until at least 2000. Unless these mechanics can give you a detailed explanation, I would take it with a pinch of salt.

You're probably right, I don't want to deter anyone since I wasn't given a more elaborate explanation. A the time I figured the green stuff was cheaper anyway, and if it didn't hurt, why not save a couple bucks?
