I have been noticing that the truck drives a little rough at times nowadays. Got the tires rotated and balanced but problem still appears intermittently.

So, I was taking a cursory look under the truck this morning when I jacked it up to see if the bearings were loose. I noticed the PS gear assembly boot (??) had a leakage on the driver's side.

What could be causing it? What is the fix for it and does the truck need to go into the shop or is it a DIY? Any input on what I am looking at here will be much appreciated.

The truck is a stock 1999 LX470 running 16s with 115,xxx miles on it.

This is more than likely NOT what would cause any rough riding, etc. But it looks to be that the rack is leaking. I just had mine rebuilt a few months ago. Could be a DIY to remove, etc...but I'd take it somewhere to actually get the rebuild done. I'm told by my mechanic that a rebuild by a reputable person is way more effective than simply installing one of the refurb units you can buy online. Until it actually starts dripping, etc it's probably not a huge deal though.

Thanks for the quick reply. I see a drop or two on the boot as of now. If you don't mind, what is the ballpark figure for the rebuild? How long was your truck in the shop? Just thinking of logistics.

For others in Atlanta area - anyone in particular you'd recommend for a rebuild?

I had a mechanic do the whole repair, and had a bunch of bushings and a few other things replaced while he was in there. I want to say the rebuild itself was around $300 or so and another $250 of the labor was likely spent getting it removed and reinstalled. $600ish or so seems fair. I also bought a set of Super Pro bushings for the steering rack for ~ $100. He had my truck for 3 days, one of the days was spent with him sending the rack to the person he preferred/recommended doing the actual rebuild.

Get a brand new one from one of our three parts guys here. All about the same pricing.

ACC (Atlanta Custom Creations) is who a bunch of us use in Atlanta. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

These guys are good people who know these machines inside and out. They know Sam at Lowe Toyota (they were the ones who told me about Sam) for parts and can eliminate a lot of the guess work with rack replacement. I now live out of state but I'm trying to find time to get back to ATL to have these folks do some work on my 100. Including rack inspection, re-indexing torsion bars, etc.

BTW, I don't believe Toyota does reman racks. I had a conversation with Sam at Lowe recently on this topic and I believe they're all new. Have to check my notes.

In the past Toyota offered reman and new steering racks...at least for '98-'02. Given the labor to swap and the nominal difference for new...new got my vote.

It is the weak link on this platform especially when running thirtyfives. Keeping the front lift height to a minimum helps...but its still the weakest link IMO.

Thanks for the input. I have dealt with both ACC and Sam in the past with very good results. I think its time I drive down to ACC to see what they think of it.

Lucas oil "Stop Leak" can buy you some time. But it is certainly borrowed time.
