Sorry but have to vent for a bit here.

Delivering mail today like i do everyday and was doing a loop on another route when i had to push open a door slot on a front door to put the mail in and was bit by a dog. Why can people make it safe for the mailman i have no clue. This is the second time i have been bit in my 2.5 years on the job now. The supervisor went out to talk to them and they have no clue as to the last time the dog had its shots :bang::bang::bang::bang:

Thanks

Go back run over dog, beat up owner, crap on yard, eat their dinner and leave.

In that order :grinpimp:

Seriously that sucks though

Damn Darin I hope you don't have to go through getting rabies shots.

I bet if you stuffed the mail partly through the slot and the dog destroyed it, the owner might do something about the dog then? Whereas biting you is probably ok to the owner? Jackasses.

I'm a "delivery boy" also, about two months ago went to a house and had to get a signature, so when the door openned, out came a pit bull, was cool at first, didn't bark, growl, nothing, women at the door was trying to keep her other pit inside so she could get out, next thing I know it starts growling and before I know what its on my hand... One tooth went completely through, it was real fun... 8 shots and a few weeks my hand was about back to normal.

Then last week I was chased around by a couple of Austraian cattle dogs, that was fun too...

I agree, there is no need for such aggressive dogs, I don't blame the dogs, I blame their owners. It's pretty crummy when you have to worry about getting injured by someones "pet" while just trying to do your job.

Here in NC, the animal control cops picked the dog up and held it for 10 days, if the owners couldn't produce shot records they'd put the dog down, in this case they did, so I only got 8 shots, instead of 15, yay me.

Be sure to watch out for infection and just so ya know, shots in the palm hurt... GL

Thanks all.

It mostly just ticks me off. The neighbor just one house over from there has 3 pitbulls and cannot control them at all so i never deliver their mail if the front door is open. Now these people just lost their mail delivery from me also. Not too sure what the boss is going to tell them but at the least they will have to put a box up by the road now.

I have some dogs on my route that will eat the mail up as soon as i slide it in, i always get a kick out of that but never had my finger bit trying to put it in their door slot.

That is odd that if there is the ability to have a box out on the street that there isn't one. Hmmm time to institute a new policy :)....Something for your boss to put on his OER :) We had one like that at a duplex once and I always wondered why they just didn't stick a box on the street. Sure would save the mail man a lot of time thruout the day not to mention the other neighbors had this POS chihuhua that the first day I moved in jumped out the window while I was carrying stuff in, never looked at me and bit my ankle...I kicked him about 15-20 feet and he never bothered me again besides some barking from a good distance away

Not all owners are like that - as an owner of an Australian Cattle Dog I can tell you that they are protective of their family -- as such -- whenever we get deliveries - usps, ups, fedex, we always have the dog up - never leave him out etc --

Good luck trying to outrun a heeler -- I look like the stay-puft marshmallow man when running with my pooch ;)

Sucks about getting bit, though -- hope all works out and it heals with no lasting effects -- plus it's pretty crappy when dog owners don't know when/if their dog had their rabies shots...

That is a good laugh there Ramon.

I always love it when a dog owner say their dog does not bite and then it comes after us full blast with teeth barred. First thing out of their mouth after is that he has never done that before. I do not know what happened Mr Mailman.

A couple of things to use as dog defense...

Pepper spray/mace:
Advantage: It works (most of the time),
Disadvantage: You have to spray it for the effect, no scare tactic...

Stun gun/taser:
Advantage: Sound usually stops a dog in its tracks at a distance, of course you can hit them with it if they get really close, and stop the rest Disadvantage: Bulky, batteries

Umbrella:
lol, true, it'll keep most dogs away as they can't figure out how to get around the open part
Disadvantage: You look like Mary Poppins, and if they get around, you look like an idiot, but this works for those people not allowed to carry the options above.

And about the cattle dogs, pits, rots, etc, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, but everyone says their dogs are just protecting them, which I'm sure they are protecting the owner/property/rubber toy/etc, too bad the dogs can't tell the difference between the mail man, meter reader, (insert other innocent person trying to do their job) vs. someone trying to break in...

Ah the joy of pet ownership, having to drive 60 miles to our terminal to pick up your packages since we won't deliver to you anymore, having to pay for a $2800 scanner cause your dog bit it trying to get to someones hand, or having to pay a $1000 doctor bill and worrying if your going to get sued.

Found out a bit more.

Dog was not registered in Nam NC. 250.00 fine for every year it was not. Still know nothing about its shot records Godd thing is, i am not foaming at the mouth yet.

Wow, kinda weird, after my bite they picked the dog up withing 24 hours, people had 24 hours after that to produce shot records or I was getting more shots, you know what the survival rate is after contracting rabies?

Still no word yet.

With the budget suts around here you can not even get ahold of a person on the weekends at animal control. Go figure, just make sure you never have a problem with an animal on a weekend here in Nam.
