Not sure if this is the right subforum for this-- but--
My brother has been pestering me to take a trip out West. I would really like to haul the Cruiser out there to do some off-road driving,(especially Moab) but we don't have the means to do that.
Our only feasible alternative at the moment is to rent an off-road type vehicle and drive out to the places we want to see-Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest(Ca)Grand Canyon/Bryce Canyon/Zion Park/Moab/Yellowstone/Badlands/Mt Rushmore/Glacier Nat Park/Olympia Forest(Wa.)
Flying out to a central location, then renting a camper is pretty much out due to the expence. We would stay in National and State park campgrounds as much as possible.
Anyone have a preference as to the best large SUV /small trailer that we could get to do this?

You can rent or drive any car if you want to go to all those parks. A lot of those parks are still pretty cool in the summer, so tent camping could work. I imagine a rental bill for a SUV point to point could get expensive. The cheapest way I've done the out west trip is to head out from home with truck and trailer and camp along the way, and not eating out. There is a host section on expedition portal with a lot of places you might be able to camp at for free along the way.

The only other way I can think of that might be cost effective (but not cheap) is to fly to Denver, rent a car, do the trip, and fly out of Denver.

Hi all,

If going to the greater Moab, Utah area then flying in, renting a J**p, and tent camping can get you out to the back country.

For National Parks like Glacier, Olympic, Yellowstone, etc. there is no off-roading, so any rental econo-box will do to get you to campsites/trailheads (for hiking.)

Regards,

Alan
