Well, let me start off my tenure by asking a stupid question:

Hi, before leaving a horrible first impression, let me start off by saying that I'm looking for a new rig to replace the GMC 2500. Simply put, it's a waste. It's a waste of space, a waste of money, a waste of gas, and a waste of a pretty good truck that someone else probably needs more than I do. It is my utility vehicle, and seeing how I haven't used it in months, I have decided to sell it and seek another utility that could double as a semi-daily driver that's economically, ecologically, and (most importantly) endorphinically friendly. I have actually been set on a diesel for the aforementioned reasons for quite a long time, and finally stumbled on the (x)J-60 a couple of days ago. I've been reading and researching, since then. I plan to find a cruiser in decent body condition with either a good running 3B, or a not-so good running *other* that could be swapped out with a JDM engine of my choice. My family lives in Japan and my father and I have been researching the idea of starting up an import export business. I would have access to whatever engine from the JDM that best suits. I am an amatuer mechanic at best, but I'm young and intelligible and willing to try anything with the garage full of tools my dad left stateside. So being more of a maxima 'guy' and not knowing the intricate details about the Toyota's, I must start off my first post here by asking a question which probably has an answer right in front of me. . . .

Sorry, I searched through the stickies and used the search function, but couldn't find an answer to the most trivial of questions

:gets flamesuit on:

What's the difference between BJ/HJ/FJ 60?

:shotts:

Thanks for reading my long boring post. You all seem like great, intelligent, kind, helpful people from what I've read and I look forward to reading more.

FJ = gas/petrol 6 cyl. 1F, 2F or 3F
BJ = diesel 4 cyl.
HJ = diesel 6 cyl.

I believe that is right.
Maybe someone else might chime in with more details. Seems to be a slow day on mud.

Yes, correct.
3B is 4 cyl 3.4 liter diesel
the turboed version of it is the 13BT

2H is a 4 liter 6 cyl diesel, the turboed version is the 12HT

all 4 are great engines, and with the turbo they have quite some power.

if you want to go modern, you can get a 1HZ (6cyl diesel) or a 1HD-T (turboed 6 cyl diesel). very good and powerful modern engines.

i call dibs on hookups from said import/export business:D welcome to mud

i did alot of work at all the intels down there. is that cruisershop down there still for sale? i always saw it fr sale in toyota trails

kenji, welcome to mud! Former maxima owner ('95) here, sold it off to buy a cruiser, the other car is a 300ZX.

As with other rabid owners' web sites, IH8MUD is full of knowledgeable peeps more than willing to save another cruiser from the crusher by helping out a new owner. The cruiser is super-easy to work on, all you have to do is get and read the FSM (factory service manual), ask intelligible (;)) questions, and last but not least, post yer pics when you find your rig!

P.S. Are you a maxima.org guy?

Well..

Thanks for the replies! I am a Maxima.org enthusiast, I go by kenji on the 'org. I too have a 95. Not selling it though, no plans to ever.
But you already know my story. I would love a 60 as a big ol' comfy daily driver. And at 20 mpg, it's already the same as my maxima, so add in the benefit of using biodiesel to support American farmers, American economy, and help grow independance from foreign oil, and driving a great rig could never feel so good!

I do wonder, was the 3.4 liter 4 cyl a typo? I've never seen a 4 banger that big! I thought it was the same 2.4 liter or similar to.. as the Toyota 2L. But again, this is something I'd obviously figure out faster by reading. I'm guessing the HJ's are quite a bit rarer then?

BJ/HJ.. if my mind were in the gutter.. ha nevermind..

So I'll keep on the lookout for those. In the meantime, yes my dad is supposed to be meeting with a friend of his today (err I guess early this morning while we all slept here in the states) who already has an export business. He'll give my dad the rundown on warehouses, shipping containers, etc etc. We already researched the basics, but his friend will give us a more first person detailed description of the process. I can't wait to get this off the ground, but I doubt it'll be up and running any time soon. We have to really study up on everything, in order to be sure we don't go bottom up in this. A lot of cash would be invested into this. Maybe you guys could help me out by compiling what you think to be higher demand engines from Japan for the cruisers would be.

Kevin,

Where is your father located in Japan?
I'm in Shizuoka.

Mot:)

Not far! My family lives in the Naruse area, in Machida-Chi (one stop from Machida). My dad works over in Camp Zama Army Base.

edit: I'd love to check out your cruiser when I'm there in July. Is it JDM? Do you have a 60?

I don't know where Naruse is, but I've been to Machida.

I don't have a 60, but my 80(81) is JDM.
When in July are you planning on coming? I might be in the US from mid-July. But if I'm here I would be happy to show it to you!

The B motor can be 2.9 for the earlier ones and 3.4 for the later 3B
There are truck versions of these such as the 14B and 15B which are 3.9 or 4.1 ltr . These are found in Dyna's and Coaster buses and also have turbo versions and can be fitted to landcruisers with some modification

The engines which are most popular to implant are the turbo varieties ,13BT 4cyl,12HT 6cyl and the 1HD-T 6cyl.
There are also 1HD FT and 1HD FTE which have more than a few wires and sensors connected to the computer and transmission making them less attractive to the home mechanic

These are modified versions of the 3B,2H and 1HZ engines.
The 1HZ should be on the list as it gives similar HP and more torque than a 2F

The HJ60/61 are quite common in Japan and Australia also has lots of HJ75

Thanks for the heads up on good motors.

I'll be out there from the 7th until the 22nd of July.

From Machida, you could probably walk to Naruse. It'd be a good walk though. It's one stop from Machida to Naruse, but I forget which line.

Kevin,

We should be here until the 18th or so of July, so let me know if you can come down (about 1.5-2.0hr Shinkansen ride away from Tokyo).

Mot ;)
