I've had the new welder for a little over a week and have got about 8 hours of practice in. My welds are starting to look way better, no more bird poop! I will tackle the tub on the 70 this winter and build a set of sliders. I've already built a battery tray as my old one was broken. If anyone wants small stuff welded let me know. They are not aerospace quality yet but I haven't been able to break one with a sledge hammer yet. I can use the practice before winter. ;)

Dave,

The welds look incredible. Maybe a full exocage is in the future;)

LOL, all I need is a tubing bender, plasma torch, metal band saw, and about 1000 more square feet in my garage and I'm in business. I'd love to get into that sort of thing on the side.

I've manages to acquire all of the above, except the 1000 more square feet and that really slows down production. You forgot the oxy/acetylene Dave, very useful for cutting (in a pinch, like U-bolts) bending, pre-heating, and a great heat wrench.

Forgot about the acetylene torch. The plasma cutter is the spendy part of getting all the toys.

FYI there is a mud member selling cheap plasmas free shipping, could get it shipped to Blaine and go and pic it up

https://forum.ih8mud.com/merchandis...g-welders-@-prices-diyer-will-appreicate.html

check out some of the you tube video's they have

his website GiantTech Plasma Cutters, Plasma Arc TIG welders, Plasma, Arc and TIG equipment.

Cool! Thanks for the heads up. I've been using Ship Happens in Sumas Wa to get stuff shipped so I don't get bent over by UPS with their brokerage fee. I just walk across the boarder and pick it up. They email you when they have your package and hold it for you. Nice people and its only a $5 fee.

Wow, those look like smoking deals on those units. I've used SHip Happens before as well, great company.
Just make sure whomever is sending the stuff there includes an invoice. Customs seems to have an issue with declaring stuff with no invoice.......

X2 on the invoice . i had a nightmare one time ,no invoice

I use blaine enterprises in Blaine same idea as ship happens :grinpimp:

or general delivery to the Blaine post office (Free)

also if you can get them to do a price break down showing the shipping cost.

you won't get taxed on the shipping amount either.

Like with everything, you get what you pay for, I saved my pennies and went for the Miller 625, the bloody thing will sever 7/8" and clean cut 1/2" and will likely outlive me.
Good for you for the fabrication, which welder did you get? Lincoln?

Yup, Lincoln 180 HD. It seems to work well so far.

That unit is a step up from the one I still have which is the Lincoln 100, similar capacity for welding material and is a great starter welder or to even keep around for smaller projects. I'm guessing you are running it gasless by looking at the pattern, if you're going to be doing body work you should invest in the gas attachments for better welds on thin stuff. I tried using non Lincoln wire on mine a couple of times and noticed the spray was much worse and the conductivity and penetration wasn't as nice, stick to the Lincoln wire. The funny part for me was when I upgraded to the Miller 252 after welding with the Lincoln for many years I had to teach myself to weld again as it's so much more powerful and I weld things in over half the time. Hope you have fun with the projects.

Great tips for a newbie welder. Yes, I'm running without a bottle for now but have all the attachments. I'm just shopping around for a deal on a bottle, a used one I hope. I'm not real familiar with where the best supply outlets are but I will stick to lincoln wire after your advise.

Thanks

Buy a small bottle from KMS Tools. When you need it filled they will either refill yours or give you another. And they are open on Saturdays.

KMS is the spot I guess. I'll get the midsize bottle.

Thanks

Not open on Saturdays, I know it doesn't sound like much, but if your going to run out of gas it will be at the start of a weekend project on a Friday night. If you can't find gas on Saturday... well you know
