I have a 50mm socket that is too shallow for my hub nut. I want to cut the back off and weld it to a larger 2 1/4 socket I have.
I can just grind off the crome plating on each socket and then weld the metal as long as the crome is gone correct?

Why don't you spend a few bucks and buy a longer socket.

Visalia Tool and Abrasive has them in stock.

I can only speak for myself here, but much of the time I spend more money and time than I should just for s***s and grins. I like to see if something can be done and still work. Sometimes it fails, but sometimes it works. I try not to do this on items that my life will depend on.

Slickrock, Post up some pics if you do it.

If it does not work, get a longer socket from the above site.

I've cut a socket before and slipped some pipe over the pieces and made what ever length socket you need.

I'm not saying it can't be done. My time on the weekends is worth a whole lot more than spending a few hours fabing up a socket.

The alternative is to drive to the next town over and buy a hub socket for $15.00 while in town doing shopping anyways.

The issue came up when I couldn't find a 50mm socket in a 30 mile radius from the small town I live in.https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=163542

So 6 bucks shipped the socket made it to me. Not much to show as a picture. I just cut the head off (took 2 4.5" grinding disks) and a few quick tacks with my stick welder. I only had about 5 minutes to do the whole job as the wife and child were demanding I go inside and make dinner. It worked likea charm and since the hubs do not require massive amounts of torque to seat the nuts, a tack a half inch long at every quarter around was more than enough.

So it was cheaper for me to order a socket and weld it to an older socket that was taking up space in the tool box than drivng for 40 minutes to buy one that was the right depth. BUT, if a person didn't have an extra socket around, a 2" pipe could be used as long as the head was retained and welded to the end of the pipe for the ratchet to snap on to.
