i too and looking for a welder.. i called a local supply store and they recommended to me either the miller 140 or the lincoln 140C

the lincoln 140C welds up to 5/16'' i think and it is gas/flux core compatible - it goes for $590 online - i think its going to be the one i'll get.

he also said that the feed mechanism on the store sold welders tend to be made of plastic whereas other models are metal/steel. for example the lincoln 140T is the store brand model which is why he recommended the 140C.

also you ask which will work for the landcruiser but it really depends on what you are doing/how much of it your doing

I would like one for both frame and body work. One that will last along time. I don't want to spend $2000.00 on one. Its only a hobby if you know what I mean.

yea thats exactly what i told the guy when i talked to him.. try maybe calling a local welding place on monday (you can google map businesses) and talk to a guy there about which welder would be the best - the guy i talked to also said that if i get one online because they are cheaper to make sure that it still comes with the 2/3 year factory warranty.

I was talking to the the guy at Home dept andhe said I'm better off going to a welding shop, store and getting the the Power MIG 180T, comes with cart and tank. $1200.00

Im still going to look for a used one. I can't see spending that much on something I wil not use that much.

someone can chime in if i'm wrong cause i don't weld. yet. but if you aren't going to weld that much than you don't need one with a tank and all that jazz.. just get a wire feed welder and use flux core.. or a mig welder that is gas/wire feed compatible so that if you ever need to use gas you can.

i'm going to get my welder tomorrow.. i'll let you know how it goes..

If you can wait, you can ALWAYS find a deal On craigslist.com

for example, I scored a Miller 185, Its 220V, nearly brand new, (valued at $950) with a Tweeko gun, (valued at $150)
A cart the guy made, cheesey ones go for $100. this one is bad ass. A full 11 pound spool of .035 (value of $ 25) and a full cylinder of 60/40. ( clyinder to purchase is $300 and $48 to fill)

I paid only $550 for the whole set up.

yeah I am bragging. But if you wait, you can score too.

Too bad your not located closer to colorado. I bought a millermatic 180 220v with stand, wire, and large argo-co2 tank just last year. Paid over $1000 for set-up. Works awsome. Used on one project. Now I'm living in a condo with no access to a shop. I had it in the local paper for $850 with everything. No takers so I kept it for hopefully future use. Now it is in storage.

powderhorn, I live in a townhouse co-op with rules. Sucks when you dont have a garage to call your own :) I may buy some property in Washington and call it my own. Properties here in Lowermainland BC Vancouver are the most unafordable properties in Canada. Sounds like the miller 180 is the ticket to doing most types of body and frame work. I may just buy one. At least I have a small yard to store it if I get around to building a shed.

Hell of a deal, Wristy:cheers:

I have a BluePoint MIG 140 that I got from the Snap on guy for $950. He threw in a Ar/CO2 bottle for free. Mine was off of a welder demonstration truck. Make friends with your local Snap On or Matco guy, those guys hear about used tools for sale all day long, not to mention swap meets and trade shows that they go to. They seem to know everyone.

I would go with at least a 140 that can do thin sheet. Mine welds great down to about 22ga. I thought I would never use a welder that much until I got one. I don't know what I did without it. With my 140 I can weld all the way up to 3/8 sheet in a single pass. I've made hundreds of parts and repairs to my FJ40. Not to mention all fo the other stuff I've done with it. Made money fabricating and repairing everything from garden ornaments from scrap to fixing lawnmower parts for friends.

As far as flux core wire is concerned, I only have a roll lying around in case I run out of gas. I can't stand it, go with the gas, especially for body work that needs to look good.

Have fun welding, and don't forget the face shield, gloves, and long pants. A "SUN"BURN from a mig welder is NOT fun to endure.

I have had a few welders both gas and non and i would never go back to flux core wire. Gas in my opinion is the only way to go. A few years ago i purchased a millermatic 175. It was the breaking line between small and big and spendy and not. I think i paid around 800 or so with gas bottle and cart. You can see some pics in the background of my Build. Just search "Chief"
It has been great and it is large enough that you can V large metal and weld pretty much anything you will ever come across and if you cant you can heat it up first and for sure weld it!!!! I have used a lincoln i think it was a 120? or something close to that both with and without gas and it was a great small gas welder.

Just my 2 cents
