Picked up my new Millermatic 211 Autoset today, seems like a nice machine so far (haven't pulled the trigger yet). Sitting here looking thru the docs, planning how/where I'm gonna put my 230V receptacle. No matter where I put it, I'm gonna need an extension cord, there's no way this 6' power cord and 10' gun lead will reach in most of the jobs where I'll be using it.

Seems to me the docs are kinda light on the wiring. They say the machine will pull a max of 24.3 A when on 230V, but they say I can run this thing off a 14ga extension cord, for up to 53 feet. The supplied cord on the machine is only 12ga. I'm shocked they don't specify and provide at least a 10ga cord for this thing. I was just about to order an 8ga extension cord, but maybe I'll just make one with some 10ga instead.

Am I missing something?

Yes, you're missing something. 10 gauge wire at 230v will support 30 amps of continuous use. Your welder will never see 100% duty cycle at full output. Physically impossible.

NEC section 640 deals with derating of wires for welding use only.

10 gauge extension cord will be fine for you welder.

For reference, I believe the primary cord for the Millermatic 251/251 is only 8 gauge.
