My brother spotted this in Santa Monica the other day. Anyone know what the story is on this oddball?

Don't know for sure, but the front end/side doors looks like a VW Thing, Type 181. I used to own one in high school. It would be fun to know the real story on this!

Those only had one door on the side and the bed was not really 40 series looking. The wheel base in not correct for either a troopy or mid wheel base 40 series. Both those had more body behind the rear axle. The tub just seems to be raised the height of the top of the doors which appear to be post 74. The frame is probably just a FJ40 frame stretched. Two tubs and two sets of rear barns doors would probably get enough to make the tub and rear doors.

Everything about it screams J4. I'd say it's just a stretched 40 or a shortened 45 with a custom tub/rear doors etc. Sure is ugly.

Looks to me like a BJ55 Bandeirante variant. The steel wheels and 4door body look Bandy.
