This is my first post- although i have been religously reading this forum for a good 4 months now. Here's the situation---I'm off to Virginia tech in a couple weeks and am going to be taking my 1990 FJ62. I have no reservations about it being able to make the 3 hour trip from NC, BUT there is very annoying and unnerving noise from the cruiser at 55-65 mph-aka prime highway speeds for the 3F. The noise -sort of a high pitched hum-was first noticed after my first trip to Uwharie in NC. I have a heavy duty OME susp., 33X12.50 at's, and a newly replaced U- joint-all of which has been professionaly installed.---I've taken it to the local toyata specialists--and they misdiagnosed the problem. SO---if anyone has any ideas as to what the problem could be--i would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks--sorry about the long post

Need more info ... but I would guess fan clutch.

Other's will chime in ...

Heres some more info
The noise started after the installation of my OME suspension and following my first wheeling trip to uhwarie. The noise is like the sound of an airplane starting its engines-it starts at about 55 and winds up till about 65. It is impossible to drown out completely with the stereo. It has been doing this for about a year now- as It was only an around town truck. Also, it was never an urgent fix-because 2 different mechanics have told me, that it is the nicest conditioned 62 they have seen at 170,000. Procare had no idea what the noise was...and toyota specialists thought the U-joint needed to be replaced because of drive shaft angle--so i had them do it--and there was no improvement.

hey volcom cruiser you skateboard or snowboard? (VOLCOM) hey are you running lifted shackles in the back? im spring over but i had that prob too put new u-joints in and it got a lil better but then i had to shim the rear. after i shimmed it, it was alllll good. might want to look into it..

good luck,
-Al

No lifted shakles here-I assume shimming the rear would only be necessary if they were lifted--or am i mistaken-
And yes i used to skate-but only longboards--still and will always surf

Im trying to get some pics added but it doesnt seem to want to let me-hmph!!

Only one thing on a Cruiser sounds like what you're describing.
Fan clutch.

Where does the noise seem to come from? Engine bay or does it sound like it's the coming from the whole truck? I like the fan clutch idea (or even the power steering pump) but if the issue started AFTER the OME, I bet lowtide is right on the shim thing. Speed related noises or vibrations usually come from the driveline.

Or, you can keep driving it like you stole the thing and wait for it to start smoking or leaking - or give out altogether, but that's the easy way to find a problem.

(and having lived in Roanoke years ago, I just know you're gonna love the surfing in Blacksburg --yuck yuck yuck)

I agree, fan clutch and it sounds like it is working normaly. Try this and see if its the same noise you are hearing. Park cruiser, block of the grill/rad with cardboard(or whatever) close hood, set the hand throttle to 1200-1500 rpms, in a few minutes(after the motor gets to normal operating temp) you should be hearing the same noise.........

why it started afterr the OME suspension I don't know.

tough to tell without actually hearing it firsthand but here are some guesses and places to consider looking:

1) tranny? is the fluid level up to spec? have you flushed and changed it out?
2) fluid levels in the t-case, front & rear diffs up to spec?
3) is the hum you are hearing related to tire noise? AT's "sing" at speed....
4) driveshafts straight, true, and balanced?
5) wild card (but not improbable): are all of your plastic grill pieces securely fastened?

if it's any consolation, our '60 "hums" a high pitched tune between 55-65 mph too. Similar setup: OME suspension, 33x10.5 BFG AT/KO's, but with a 2F and 5-speed manual. Can't pinpoint our sound either but not too worried about it -- truck runs great.

Good luck,

Maybe fan clutch depending on where you hear the sound. The fan clutch should not b directly related to speed but to temp but your description sounds like it. Drop the rear shaft and drive it that speed in FWD, carefully! and see if you get the sound. I would look at the pinion bearing, TC output bearing and TC idler shaft. Almost all 62 transfers will need to be rebuilt by 200,000 miles. The idler shaft will make a funny hum at different speeds. I have never found the need to shim the rear axle on a 60 series and it is more difficult to do as the spring pack has the metal cover over the ctr of it.

Wow--thanks to all of you guys that wrote in--ive got some good leads to check out-and I should be able to nail it down now-or just hope nobody notices me driving with headphones--thanks again--and happy cruisen
