This has now happened twice in 60 days. When I go to start the engine, the engine will crank, rev to high RPMs (1800-2000), quickly sputter and the starter will engage again, on its own, only to kill the engine. I can turn the key off and try again and it starts flawlessly.

My first assumption was my modified fusible link was the cause (I have recently replaced all my battery cables with the heavy duty ones from FourRunner and modded the original FI the first time this happened). Since then, I replaced the fusible link with a new OEM one, but it happened again yesterday.

Other details. I daily drive this 80 and it starts and runs flawlessly all but twice.

I have a Viper remote lock/start to operate power locks. I rarely use remote start, but it does work well.

I have not sold my soul to the devil; therefore, I’m ruling out possessed, but when it happens that’s my first thought!

Typical symptoms of failing contacts/plunger internal to the starter. Repair immediately or you could end up with a fire.

I ordered a reman from local Toyota Dealership. Do most you you turn-in your core and get the $60 credit or keep it & replace contacts & plunger to have a starter around for future use? I assume this one is original and lasted 220k miles. I’d hope an OEM reman would last another 100k.
