this is a video i found on youtube but i was wondering how the heck you would waterproof everything so well that this is possible!

what all would need to done?

YouTube - 4x4 F-J 40 Snorkel Jeep

wow really wet.

One of manuls I have covers some of the details, but nothing on that scale. I guess that most everything but the clutch housing and electrical are pretty much covered, except the maybe the speedometer, and the light sockets. :) I'd guess his fj has most of that stuff removed, or he just wanted to go through it all anyway and so why not try it.:hhmm: worse case, your friends think your cool for trying it. and the for-thought of taking the video, well that just cements the motive.

I didn't see exhaust bubbling up from behind the vehicle??? Back in the day when I use to hose out the interior of my FJ40 after a dusty run, I discovered that almost everything inside was already pretty much water proof except the horn button guts and the cig. lighter. Remedy: remove guts from behind horn button, install marine water proof starter button (push button) for horn in the cig lighter location, and quit smoking---easy deal.

diesel

yes i think i saw that w/o the music and it was diesel---no ignition to worry about

It would be cool if it wasn't labeled a "4x4 F-J 40 Snorkel JEEP" Shiesh... Anyway all you really need is the snorkel and just to be on the safe side, slop some dielectric grease on both ends of the spark plug wires.

ok, i have an hei distributor on my sbc 350. would i have to worry about getting water in the cap?

mud

cant see doing that with my 40 for fun--IH8MUD

igntions systems can be waterproofed but still will be more vulnerable than no ignition system

diesel just needs to keep the fuel turned on

Yes it would be possible to do that with a gasoline engine but its a lot of work involved to get everything sealed against the elements.
Distributor cap in silicone chaulk with a rubber glove around, sealed spark plug caps &&& just to much work.

The one in the video, like mentioned before, is a diesel no problems there.
These guys are actually from my country and are member of the ORC Grenzland.

The original video with all sound, straight from the folks who did that.

They even like to pull caterpilars.:steer:

Thats why I love my diesels

the military gmc 270 is basicly the same engine and will run under water i have bolted all that stuff on a 65 fj40 including the declutch fan ,never tried it on the later f engine.with the right preperation any truck should run under water .but if all you get is a video i doubt its worth it good luck

I never get tired of this video. I think you can h20 proof most engines with a lot of attention to detail. Venting of axles, transmission and transfer are also important. h20 proofing an hei may prove to be a challenge with a vacuum advance unit, theres quite a hole under that unit for the advance. All of you vents and breathers can be plumbed into your snorkle. Exhaust is another matter. I've run mine under water on occasion but not for long and I never let off the gas. Hydro-locking a motor can be devistating to valves and stuff, ask me how I know this. I swamped a cj-8 in some deep water years ago, it wasn't the first time I did it, but the last time when the engine got beaten and then I gave up on truck swimming and creek-a-thons. Still its an un-natural fun that can only be experinced when your ass is under water while driving. It is hard on speedos. When I sold my scrambler the speedo was still fogged up from her last swim meet.

haha, i remember using the hose to spray out the truck when the inside would get covered with mud. and i guess i do remember the gauges getting all foggy. haha would the wiper motor or any electronics get fried? how bout sealing the gas tank? does the gas cap seal that well?
