I did the search, but only found threads about how the stock gauge can and does behave erratic, but does anyone know what the fix is to this? I think I remember hearing about something with the contacts behind the gauge.

I'm going to replace the sender to, but want to make sure the gauge is not going to still send me erratic measurements.

Oh, and yes, I am also going to add a mechanical gauge as a redundant feature...I've heard about guys adding tee at the exisiting electric water temperature sender location but heard this isn't a good idea as it wouldn't give the mech gauge a "true" reading.

I found these:Adapters and Bushings:*Radiator / Heater Hose Adapters for Temp. Senders - egauges.com

and thought that I could add the mechanical gauge to one of the hoses...which hose do you think would be the best? Top radiator hose?

Thanks for any input.

IIRC the problematic contacts are with the fuel gauge and you can correct the temp gauge spiking by replacing the fuel gauge. I've had only minor success by filing the contacts in the fuel gauge.

The issue is a secondary voltage regulator that's part of the coolant temp gauge. You can disassemble the gauge cluster and dress the contact points of the VR or just replace the coolant temp module of the cluster. For all the work that you're going to do to remove the dash cluster the couple of bucks for a new coolant temp gauge are worth it - IMHO.
