So, my water pump pulley went. I've got a used one I'm going to put in, but I have a really stupid question (I'm very green). I understand that I adjust the tension in the belt once the pulley is on via the alternator, however, how does one know how much tension to put on it??

Thanks for your help!!

There is a method in the manual that involves measuring the force it requires to deflect the belt on the longest side, however if you can get 10mm deflection with your fingers easily, its probably about right.
If it slips, tighten a little more.
Check it after a week or two as they stretch.

Dont over do it as it can damage bushes and bearings.
Its just something you learn to do over time through experience;)

Great! Thank you very much! Okay, another stupid question. I'm a student so I don't have a lot of time and only just got to looking at the job. I consulted the manual, but I can't tell for sure–will I have to remove the radiator or just the fan cover and fan?

Also, I removed the nuts from the pulley. 3 of 4 of the nuts were 12mm, but one nut was 13mm (job gone wrong by someone else maybe?). Moreover, the bolt that was attached to the 13mm nut has been sheared and does not look too healthy...Obviously, I will need to replace it with the appropriate bolt and nut. Is there anything special I need to know??

Ive never done a water pump on your model so I dont now how much room you have betwen the pump and radiator.
But from experience ,its always easier without the radiator in the way and less chance of damaging it with a loose wrench.
Have a good look before you start and decide how much room you need.
Im not sure about the nuts, but on the bolts, non toyota bolts are 1mm bigger on the hex than toyota's for the same thread.
My landcruiser is are a mix of 12mm and 13mm. I have a large nut and bolt dealer nearby and they are much more efficient at finding the right thread than the dealer .

Take your time and check everything twice. Its a good job for newb,I remember doing one about 30 odd years in my parents driveway in flared jeans:D

Woot! Just finished. That was pretty awesome! I'm feeling pretty satisfied with myself right now. Okay, couple of questions. I took the rad and fan off. After I took the old pulley off, I inspected the water pump (visually) and noticed that the old pulley did some damage to the outside of the pump–i.e. there is a small gouge taken out of the exterior of the pump. It doesn't look like it has caused any serious structural damage, but is this something I should worry about??

Also, I was thinking about looking into the vacuum pump as I am finding braking to be rather difficult at times–the pedal is quite hard. This is what the manual says could be wrong. Would it be a big job for me to take the vacuum pump off and inspect it or should I leave it to a mechanic?

Thank you once again for your help!
