I was in the process of installing Kevin's side panel doors and found this?!? About 2.5" of water.

How does it get there and should I worry about it?

Thanks for any advice.

I can't answer your first question, but there are drain slots in the bottom of the quarter panels, so if water does get in there, it should drain out. You should clean out the crud and unclog the drains.

Thanks 2mbb. I'll check that out. Do you know roughly where the drain holes are? I assume that I'll be able to see them from the underside? Despite being pin-headed I can't fit my head in from the inside and couldn't feel anything.

Ben - Without knowing where the water comes from sealer is second on the list. Good to know about, thanks.

Appreciate your help!

There are two rubber plugs on each side...remove them and watch the waterfall. This happens because the drain slot openings are plugged up. Clean them out every so often and this wont happen anymore.

As to how it gets there I have two theories:

1. The Gas filler neck.
2. The vent on the C-pillar(furthest rear). They are functional in that the do have a flap that lets air out, but I'm sure after a while they also might let water down into the quarter panel.

Killer, thanks.

As to how it gets there . . . water on the port side precludes filler issues but will check the pillar vents and report back.

Tail light, side marker and C-pillar gaskets all look good and there is no sign of leakage from the inside. Is there any chance the water is coming from the rain gutter?

I also located the drain hole but it has a plug in it. Is that standard or should I remove it?

That rubber plug should be there. The drains are more like small slots that are at the bottom where the two sheets of metal that make up your quarter panel come together. They are more than likely plugged up or even worse, smashed shut.

the thing i love about this land cruisers is every day i learn something new... and see something that i'm like whaaaattttt how the heck does that happen? If i had bought a sports car like i had intended, i wouldn't be seeing this, and that is worth something... right? right.

Does anyone have a part number for those rear quarter rubber plugs? My dealership is near worthless and says they just size them by eye not part number (dips#$ts) I tried Onur but he now has a $100 minimum order. I offered to pay him for his time to look up the part number but no joy.

If you don't get to score those rubber plugs...
Permatex gasket maker is your friend...

That's the ticket, thanks 4Cruisers and Ming.
No problem, glad to help. I'm learning (and documenting) a lot of information about FJ60s and FJ62s due to my '86 FJ60 project. Most all of my '89 FJ62 is being swapped over into my rust-free '86 FJ60, so I'm learning a lot about the subtle differences between the two models. I've been careful to document via photos and notes as I remove/reinstall parts between the two vehicles. One thing that's been bothering me recently as I work on swapping over the rear wiring harnesses and the fuel tank/lines is "What, if anything, was attached to the two brackets below the fuel hose nipples?" (shown in your photo). I don't recall removing anything from my FJ62 in that location. Is there supposed to be anything attached there?

I may not be the best person as my 62 had a GM engine installed when I purchased it and there was never anything there.

BTW, the Toyota dealer genius was surprised I was smarter than him when I showed him the part number for the plugs. Go figure.
