I was watching an over landing video and saw one of there used on a Taco. For me, if I was at a water crossing where I thought I might see water over my hood, I’d find another crossing or turn around. But maybe in an emergency, where I didn’t have a choice, it might be nice to have in the gear bag?

Anyone ever used one of these?

I clicked that link 100% sure I was getting rickrolled.

Definitely a gift for the truck that has everything.

IMHO looks like a disaster in the making.

I think the idea would actually do what it’s intended to do in making a more effective bow wave. The “disaster in the making part” is thinking bow wave is reliable strategy.

Looks ridiculous to me. I've been in water deeper than I should with the stock air cleaner setup without issue. I think money might be better spent toward a snorkel and a good breather setup for your diffs, et al.

Yeah, looks like a partial SUV condom. Probably works to a degree, but like the Op, I'd agree that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I've only done a few water crossings, and I tend to check depth first, then determine whether it's worth driving my $$$ SUV into it. In my circumstances, I've usually been able to find a better/safer/smarter way across...That said, I've enjoyed (somewhat sadistically) being an armchair quarterback while people drive their expensive vehicles into impending doom and destruction.

That's my thinking, too.

Unfortunately, I suspect the vast majority of broverlanders that will buy this will think that - much like a snorkel - this will turn their truck into a submarine, leading to the inevitable...

In the video the reason they used the cover was because the Taco didn’t have a snorkel.

When you are 100% sponsored and rely on YouTube ad revenue to make a living your risk calculation is different than mine.

For most people, though I put this thing in the category of it might make a bad idea marginally less bad.

it's not like you're going to get the cure for Cancer or win the Billion dollar lottery by crossing a marginal crossing so why? I know the chicken had to cross the road. The alternator is the low point potential disaster IMHO.

You can always get a water cooled alternator.

i dont think that itll really do all that much, i would save the money. sure it will help with water coming in through the grill but youll still get water coming in through the wheel wells and from under the truck. no matter how the water gets in under the hood whatevers below the waterline can and will get wet, including the air box

You’d be better off investing in a snorkel.

Honesty if you were in a really bad predicament I’d just carry some extra trash bags and gorilla tape, as opposed to this. I don’t really think it would help you much, but I do think you’re blocking airflow when not submerged and wouldn’t want to do this very long regardless

It's a bit unrealistic to think that you can drive around or otherwise avoid all water crossing altogether. I've been on trips where we were hours into the drive and the only way out, other than turning around and retracing steps, is across and through water. No bypass available. It is just one of many obstacles and hazards we need to be prepared to deal with when we go offroad.

Yeah that’s why I bought a snorkel.

I still think if your goal is an insurance policy, 30 gallon trash bags, a knife, and some gorilla tape will do the trick. Seriously you can overpack and overspend on stuff but the tools that can do double duty are a win in my book, and everyone should have the above in their truck

Trash bags and tape don't leave home without them!!
