1971 F Engine with exhaust leak on the most forward cylinder. I removed and replaced the manifold many times, replacing with new gaskets, multigaskets, puttys and planing the head......... with no success.

I finally in a flash of genious......determined the warpness was not a twist or on the face but rather in the wertical:crybaby::. The manifold was curving up creating the misalignment with the exhaust port that could not be addressed with a new standard gasket(s).

Any options? I searched a bit but did not find a solution.

Yes the noise is intolerable.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

John

Have it milled while bolted to the intake.....

Thanks Texican but how would that correct the misalignment of the exhaust port on the head to the exhaust port on the exhaust manifold?

Is it possible to take the "vertical" warp out of an exhaust manifold or do I need to replace the manifold?

If so does anyone have an F manifold for that year they would like to sell?

I'm in Rhode Island outside of Providence.

Thanks,

John

header then, doubtful to locate a good manifold of that vintage.....

Build up some weld on the exhaust manifold with nickel welding rod. Then grind and file the port and face back to where they need to be.

You might also check with Cruiser Solutions in NH or Poor Wally's in VT to see if they have a used manifold for sale. You might have to ask in the Yankee Toys clubhouse for Wally's contact info.

I had similar alignment issues on my 74F. After several attempts at gasket changes I ended up with three different brand used gaskets and one new OEM. Since I only used never seize on them and removed them right away, I got a good imprint and could see there was just barely contact on the bottom edge of the outer ports due to the warp. but I also noticed that some of the gaskets had slightly larger bolt holes, I'm guessing to make up for the lack of precission in an aftermarket part. When I slid each gasket onto the studs I found some of the gaskets could move up and down a bit on the hole slop. To test my suspicion I took the worst looking used gasket put it on with the nuts loose, then pushed the gasket up on the slop from underneath and then pushed and held the manifolds in to hold it up till I tightened the nuts. No leaks for several years until I had it disassemled for other work. Might work for ya! Steamer

Your '74F has the smaller manifold studs, 2Fs had larger studs...

1.) Still looking for a F-Manifold if anyone has one.

2.) I have headers on a 77 FJ40 ..would they fit on the F engine?

3.) I might try the gasket shift but I think I tried that last year during my multiple installs and removals.

Thanks,

John
