Trans/T-Case

Neverdone,
You may want to check the 5-19 craigslist post for "1978 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 Parts (Statesville,NC)". Fairly close to you....if he doesn't reply I can probably find his # (just PM me). I have a '79 FJ40 also & was up there looking at this rig, which he's now parting out.
Good luck,
Gabe

Thanks man, I will check that out !!

I have an excellent low-miles H42 in Texas, but it would be a heavy sum-betch to ship. No top cover or shift lever. Shifted like butter when I removed it for an H41/Orion.

Hey 1911, that would be perfect, but you're right, long way to ship that heavy thing...and that's a 13 hour drive. Thanks, but I will try to find one a little closer.

Thanks

Hey JT805, will those transmissions mate up to the fj40 ? I've never researched that idea. Or would I need additional adapters and such ?

Thanks for the info !!

I've recently disassembled an 84-85 FJ60 split transfercase case it came off a perfectly running daily driver. It's apart and in process of being cleaned up and the case painted. Everything in the case looked good no abnormal wear on the gears no chunks in the case. It'll be ready for a seal and rebuild kit and reassembly. PM me if your interested well discuss price and shipping.
It'd be a haul but I'd be willing to meet you somewhere 1/2 way.

The 8/80 and later transmission will work if you have the split case to go with it. But that have their own crossmember that goes under the transmission. The crossmember from a 60 series is too wide. You would want one from a 40 series which are harder to find. I asked the question on here if you couldn't just use the old rear motor mounts the pre 8/80 use with the split case. The over opinion was it was to heavy and best to use the crossmember. Besides the crossmember the shifter location with change with a 60 series transmission. The simple way is to find one of the same type as yours.

Thanks to all for the info and advice.

I went ahead and bought the one off of craigslist...closest to me.

The guy I bought it from said he was there when his parents bought the fj40 brand new, and he eventually got it from them and decided to sell and then part out.

The tranny and transfer have been out of vehicle for 6 years, sitting on ground, but out of direct weather. The shafts would turn, but lots of resistance.

Got it home, took a look inside and transfer was great !! Tranny gears had about 5 teeth each that had some surface rust on them. Cleaned them up and smooth.

But let me tell you, the gears in the tranny and trans look awesome, no chunks missing, wear pattern is dead center. This thing looks great....aside from a little rust.

So if you are looking at an old trans / transfer and there is any unusual or unequal resistance when turning, be careful, you may have some work ahead of you.

Thanks again !!
