Will be picking up my silver C-package FJ on Monday and plan on headin right down to the tire shop and sticking on some upgraded tires (Yokohama Geolander A/T) have had these tires on other 4x4's and were extremely rugged and long wearing! My question is?? - what would be the next size up I could go without having to do a lift or any modifications? just want a little more beefier look , but still have good fender clearance.The stock size is 265/70R17. thanx

The stock size is 265/70R17.

You should have no problem going with 285/70/17. It's only about 5/8" taller sidewall and about 3/4" wider. 295/70/17 may be a stretch though being about 13/16" taller sidewall and 1 3/16" wider. Hope this helps.

thanks very much for your info!! - much appreciated!

(not trying to highjack your thread but....)

Has anyone done any experimenting yet with tire sizes and lifts? Here are the numbers I'm interested in:

Lift == max tire size

Stock (no lift) == 285/70/17
2" lift == ??
3" lift == ??
4" lift (if avail) == ??

Just kind of curious.

yea someone posted a pic of a 3" lift fj on some 285/70's and it looked like you could go a bit bigger, maybe a 295/70.

i think the 265/70 size looks good for a stock fj. maybe just upgrade to a bfg all terrain, nitto terra grappler, interco trxus...just any all terrain. maybe a mud terrain if you wheel alot

Stock size in a Goodyear MTR or BFG M/T will probably give you the look you're wanting w/o sacrificing articulation if you don't plan on lifting. Of course their are trade offs with agressive tires ...

I'm keeping the stock size and trading into BFG A/Ts, which i guess don't clean great but last long and are good in the snow :)

I believe on avg the consensus of tire post is that the BFG AT's are not that good on snow and ice, but a good AT other than that. There is at least one tire thread here that went into some technical discussions as to why the BFG AT tread design is squirly on ice and wet/slick snow. The streets of Anchorage the last 5 winters have proved it to me, I will be going with something else next time.

you should know----dang too late now I think--my tire guy would kill me. He has special ordered 5 17s and is giving me 70 a tire for the OEM crap

Shoulda searched more.....TY :crybaby:

PS well I did some more searching. Boy it's a divided camp on how good the BFGs are. About half rave about them--even in snow! And many of these have tried other tires. The other half have various complaints-- snow and ice being one.

The other issue for me is rock damage--not from extreme crawls--but from sharp rocks that are on many of the USFS roads I use during the summer.

At least the BFG seems tough--- one guys says the trick is to sipe them at 25k

I guess they last FOREVER

They do last forever. I think I ran them for 70k on my FJ80 and they still had plenty of thread.

Ditto Klaus, I have about 25k on mine and no excessive wear. I'll just get an ice radial next winter if I can and keep the BFG's for summer.

I sipped the set I had on my FJ40 way back when, it did appear to increase wear. They were going bald at 40K, but this was the early 90's style (not the KO's).

I have shredded more than my share of BFG sidewalls. I will never buy another BFG AT or MT. I used to bring an extra (besides my spare ) to the BHCC because I cut tires.
The MTR's I switched to have yet to suffer a single sidewall failure from pointy rocks and such.
