saw that WalMart has an AT tire called the Liberator. It's $99 for a 285/75/16.
I saw it mentioned that they are part of the BFG / Michelin family so maybe not complete crap?
Anybody knows about these? Any good?

Walmart tires on a 45 thousand dollar vehicle........................:D

Nice touch.......

I used these tires on my 81 for 8 years. they wear well, handle really well, quiet, very good traction on dirt and rocks. However They pack up in the mud, not real bad but it gets annoying. I would have put these tires on my cruiser and my 4runner but there is no walmart tire center near moscow.
Overall an excelllent tire for the money.

I think you need parts........

Just because a tire is more expensive doesn't necessarily mean it is better. Putting the Walmart name on a similar product brings down its price- this might make it a good value if it is indeed part of the BFG / Michelin family.

Yaa see how quickly he backed away when the puppies food supply was threatened. :D

I actually had them on my Jeep GC. Never did any king of 'wheelin' in the jeep, but on road they help up nicely and did fairly well in snow.

for $50 per tire you can get Firestone Destination MT's! You know you want them! (I now have them on both cruisers)

Odd you mention those. I am very close to being convinced these are the way to go. Interesting thing is that I found out today that one of my local tire guys beats Tirerack by quite a bit on these. I read a bunch of the reviews for the BFG MT, the Goodyear MT/R, and the Firestone MT, and the latter is much more evenly praised than the others. Ranks higher in the survey too. (And sheeeeeeiiiiiiiaaaaaaaaaaaat, it looks good too.... -not that that would matter to a real wheeler, though....) How do they hold up on yours?

E

E- I love them on my 80. I've done some fairly serious wheelin' with them and they've held up nicely. Since they are an LT tire (8 ply or something insane like that) they are very stiff tires, so my steering response went UP and cornering went up as well.

I don't think that they are loud on the highway's- yes you can hear them, but in the 80 it isn't any worse than the wind noise with windows down, or sunroof open. They are actually quiter than the bald OE michelins that the truck came with, but I attribute that to how bald they were. I was actually debating on wether it would be safe to drive 600 miles on the set when I purchased the vehicle. I was also pulling the 60 on a trailer behind the 80. It was a hair-raising drive.

I have nothing bad to say about the firestone's and have no worry about seperation or de-lamination. Firestone is probobly the safest tire out there right now because of the quality checks instituted after the explorer debacle.

I think the best review I can give the Firestone's is that I'm putting them on my 60 as well. I didn't even think about another tire. In fact, later on down the road I've thought about buying a set of swampers for the stock 15" wheels and keeping them for tearing up off-road.

And yes, they do look gooooooooooooooood on there!

Hey Klier, You have a WalMart 45 mns. from ya in Lewiston. How do I know? I'm in Clarkston.

Doc, Did you mean $50 a tire? Or $150? If $50, Then tell me where?

the MT in 285 is about $150 a pop

I am not sure if the destinations are good or not.

I had a set of Wilderness A/Ts that came on my Tacoma. They lasted about 13K miles and maybe had a 1/4 tread left. I finally got rid of them when I almost hydroplanned into on coming traffic on a highway.

Just remember tires are the only part of your truck that touch the ground. All the suspension and driveline mods in the world are useless with a bad set of tires.

hell even my single wide mobile home has BFG's.............:D

Wall Mart Also Sells By Special Order Mud Terrains They A Rebadged Kelly Springfields The Same Exact Tire Big O Sells For 190.00@35s,wallmart 120.
I Had Them On My Fj60 They Worked Great The Liberators Arent Bad Either I Ran Them On My Dodge 3/4 Ton Van . Ask At The Tire Center About The 35s Or Check Out There Website They Only Charge 9.76 For Mount And Balance New Stems, with Road Hazzard.
It Was Funny Watching Them Trying To Find Reverse Im My Fj60

I'd be much more concerned about buying Kelly Springfields or the related off brands than buying Firestone MTs. I have an absolute hate relationship with the Wild Country family of tires which is a rebadge Kelly Springfield. The Firestone MTs aren't even made in the offending factory that made the infamous Firestone Explorer tires.

Some of the rebadged BFGs aren't just rebadged, the technology used to make them cheaper isn't only in the letters on the side. Many of the other tires they sell under different names have different rubber compounds and different sidewall construction. The MT clone made by BFG that I tried only had 2 ply sidewalls and the rubber was much softer. They worked OK and was quite a bit cheaper. I think I paid $480 for a set of 4 35x12.50x15s. At the time the BFG MTs would have been about $720. I'm not saying that the Liberator is a good or bad tire. But the price savings is probably more than just a name change.
