There has been alot of talk lately about VR.....i have an 1983 with an internal VR....i needed to replace mine so i have outlined it for those who may have to do in the future. all you need is a phillips head screw driver, a wrench to remove battery cable, emory cloth to clean contacts, and 15 minutes...

replacement voltage regulator was $24.00 from rockauto...standard products part # VR160....shipped in two days for $6.00 to VA

voltage regulator has 7 screws total....two on the top cap, two on the side cap, and three on the VR contact leads...

remove the battery cable.....
remove the side cover screws and cover,
remove the terminal screws,
remove the top cover screws and pull straight up on VR.

once VR is out make sure you seperate plastic cover which has a gasket that seals base of VR and individual contact terminals. place plastic base cover on new VR. take emeory cloth and freshen contact tabs. place new VR and bottom cover onto alternator making sure contact tabs slide through bottom gasket.

screw down VR top cover

replace terminal screws

replace side cover

connect battery

start

i now have 14.14 volts at idle....yeah

Nice write up.

But I had a problem once with the Standard brand VR The casing is plastic, while the Toyo is metal. I bought the Standard (Rockauto), and when installing, the case immediately cracked and both "wings" came off - I did not over-tighten. Maybe I just had a junk one, dunno, but I returned it and bought a reman Toyota (27700-38100-84) for $37

thanks

junk is possible....mine was metal like the original denso one on my alternator so everything fit perfectly...

Metal now? Good to know, they must have redesigned.

AHHHA! This is the thread I have been searching for. I just replaced my ALT and I am still having issues with battery charging, and I was thinking that replacing the VR could possibly help correct this. This is kinda pointing me in that direction even more.
