Early VINS were short, not invalid. Places like CARFAX do not track prior to a certain date that I do not recall at which time VINS began having more characters (11 or 12?). I have not found any place that does.

VIN's changed in the late '70's or early '80's. That is common to all models as far as I know. My daughters '76 FJ55 has a short VIN, my '82 BJ60 has a long VIN so the change occured between the two years.

The requirement for a 17 digit VIN started in 1981 for North America. Carfax usually doesn't have the ability to look up the old 10 digit VINs unfortunately.
