I am driving a 1984 hj 60 from Panama to Montana in a couple days. The tag on the engine side is in an Attached photo...I'm not having any luck translating it. Can anyone help?

861 color sky blue
KO52 Open Diff
Fb11 dark grey interior
H41 4 SPEED Manual
2H 6cyl diesel non turbo

Build in plant A11

General markets.
No specific country.
Maybe find a sticker inside the car.Glovebox ?.
This model was also sold in some European country's

Build in Februari 1984 .That is what the fame number tells me.
Model HJ60 LG-K build from '80--'87

Excellent info. Are any of those numbers the "VIN" number....for paperwork purposes, or parts purposes? The Panama title I have has HJ60L YK in the VIN spot

Frame nr is VIN NR = Something like this ### HJ60###0017116
Can be found on the frame on the right hand side in front of the front spring hanger.
L = left hand drive
Y= ? (something Panamese ?)

Thanks again. I think it was imported into Panama a few years back, from South America. The frame has welded extensions on the front of it...so I can't seem to find any other numbers, other than the firewall numbers.

Look over the top of your right hand side front wheel. You should see a number towards the left rear side on the frame.just before the spring hanger.
The extensions are from a OEM pto winch.
Do you have the winch control in the cab?.

What happened with the sky blue?

Why do I have in my mind that VIN numbers were only ever implemented for the US market? Could be completely off-base but have that thought rattling around in my head.

Also, other place to check is the drivers side door jamb. should be another plate there just below the striker.
And curious about the color change as well... entire truck could have had a full repaint with different color but if so, they did a damn good job and hit EVERYTHING. Concern with that though is the plate could be from a different vehicle and was "added" on at some point. Since you seem to have the vehicle available I would start poking around in the door jambs, weatherstriping, etc. to see if you can see any areas that have been painted over. Hood springs are showing what looks like overspray but hard to tell in your photo.

You don’t need to write or say “number” after VIN...

The tag on the firewall doesn’t have the VIN on it, just model and build info.

The VIN’s I’ve seen are on the dash and door jamb. Here’s a door jamb plate:
full

The VIN is etched into it, so if yours was painted over a light bit of sanding of the plate should reveal it.

forgot about the one at the windshield edge and dash, driver side. you can see it standing where the fender and door meet, you'll see the indent where it should be on US spec rigs.
but as @gregnash stated above the 17 digit vin may have been a US thing until the early 90's worldwide.
otherwise you could use the HJ60017116 which would be similar to all 40's, 45's and 55's pre 1981

The only VIN on my JDM HJ is on the frame. Located right where Sved said to look.

Yeah, it's been repainted years ago, not a particularly fancy job. The usual location on the door doesn't exist... I don't see the dash/windshield one either. There's no winch or control for it.... unfortunately. I spent some time looking for the numbers on the frame with a putty knife to scrape paint, dirt and grease...no sign of numbers.

As long as you have the paperwork for it from Panama, I wouldn’t worry. I believe in some states they will assign a VIN, others may let you register it with less than 17 digits.

I hope that's right. I've got a bunch of borders to cross, with a bunch of mental midgets to deal with before I even get to Texas.....and it'll be a slooooow drive - but what an adventure!! Thanks for all of the input everyone

That sure is pretty. I made it to the US. Are these the plates that can be riveted to the door to make insurance companies happy? It looks like I'll need to make a new VIN number.
