Here are some videos I got from the Current Dirty Toy School Trip to Anza- Borrego Springs on Dec 5-7 2008.

I would like to thank Bill Burke and Chris Nelson for their great instruction and tons of fun my brother-in-law and I had.

looks like fun!

takes big ones to take a 200 out there. Good for you! That rock garden, that's the hill to go to Sheep Canyon, right? Never tried that in reverse. good practice!

Yeah it is the one to sheep canyon. Chris wanted us to learn

A) how to spot

B) how to trust your spotter

The rocks killed my rear bumper. Thank goodness I am planning on getting a new one....when one becomes available.

Excellent videos. I am suprised how well the FJ handled the sand. As for the Land Cruiser. I can't believe Toyota does not have a rear locker for that vehicle but the Tacoma, FJ and 4runner all can be factory equipped.

Couple questions?

did you use DAC control going down?
Were you in 4 lo?
I thought ABS worked in 4lo for off roading?

Great videos overall.

You and me both. You would think for $70k they would include it!

DAC?? I have no idea what that is.

Yes I was in 4 lo....didn't matter though...it was so dang steep.

The truck was steerable...just slid TONS.
Yes ABS does work, but it was sliding so bad nothing mattered really. :)

DAC is Downhill Assist Control. I thought the LC had it.

Do you mean Crawl Control?

I used it one some up and down hills. Worked AMAZINGLY well. Amazing is the only work to say.

This hill I wanted to do myself. There is not substitute for experience.

no less admirable your doing it in the 200 and in reverse at that, but if you're curious, they just (about a year ago) flattened that rock garden. It was more interesting (!) before, including the pointy big rock on the RHS going up that they jackhammered off. That one, although easy to avoid, could have done a number on a truck from bow to stern. I guess they thought it was bad PR. :)

Geez, now even the riff raff can get to Sheep Canyon... :D

Used to be looky loos parked at the bottom that would watch better-equipped folks go up. Come to think of it, I don't think my wife ever stayed in the truck while I was going through. For some reason she liked better walking it... :D

And yes, that sandy descent would have given me the willies. Hate to lose control of the truck with potential cambered situations....

Nice - can't spend the time at work viewing but will tonight.

Coyote Canyon in reverse sounds like a blast!

Just didn't have the coin to do this.

That first vid is embarrasing...LC getting pulled out by a Land Rover!?!

You should have requested another Toy instead of the Defender!

It was not embarrassing. I knew I might not make it without lockers...if anything I am embarrassed that I didn't have a rear locker!

Here is another album from a photographer who was there to document everything for 4wd Toyota
Owner Magazine.

If you will al notice that there were other vehicles that needed winching out of the same spot as me.

Darby's FJ40 needed to be pulled out, only to be flipped over later that day!

Glad he was alright!
