I put on some BFG 285/75/16 A/T TA KO's and I'm now experiencing some vibration on the highway (70+mph) that I didn't have with the stock tires. Is this expected with the bigger tires or should I take it back to get the balance re-done? No other changes made to the truck that would have an impact. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like your tires were not balanced right. New 285/75/R16 should not vibrate at all.

bad balancing. tell them to zero it out- not "close enough".
My 285 MTR's are smooth at any speed, the guy there took the time to balance them.

Get the balance re-done. I run 285/75/16 BFG M/T on a daily driver.

yes take it back

I've heard that with 35s and up muders this can be a problem. 285 at should not at all.

Thanks for the advice from all. Back it goes.

Yahuh .. sounds like a plan. My SS IROK 36" radials took almost 2 hrs to balance and mount  , but in the end even they have no vibes .. just a dull hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :D

Balancing may be the big culprit, but have you repacked all the bearings and made sure the wheeling beariing are tight. You have gone from a nice highway mall cruiser tire to a agressive all terrian and it may be a little much for loose wheel bearing. So if the rebalance does not work, then look to the wheel bearing being loose. later robbie

every set of BFG ATs that I've had had to go back to get rebalanced after driving on them a bit. Multiple sizes also.

I thought vibration, shakes, out of round are features of BFGs! Costco tried to tell me it's normal. It would start about 15-20K miles, I would take in for balancing once a month, they would get tired of that, and tell me that my rims were bent because the tires aren't running true. Wrong answer! Then they would say that all big offroad tires do that and if I am going to run them get used to it. Wrong answer! They wound up replacing them twice, it's nice to get new tires every two years, but not worth the hassle. This was on my '90 4Runner, I had really bad luck with them, don't know if it was the tire/truck combo, my driving, the hot Arizona summers, but it turned me off on BFGs.

I have the BFG Longtrails of same size. I have slight rocking between 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock on the tire when lifted. SO i'm doing the front axle service soon. However, a good balance still helps. I used some advice found here previously and had my tires balanced on a Hunter RoadForce machine that simulates the tires contact with the road when balancing. It really helped, but I still have to do the axle and then I expect it to be perfect.
Look here for Hunter RoadForce machines in your area:

I have the tire maintenance package, so they too have to rebalance mine. Fortunately, I found a machine within my dealer network. Be sure to ask that your tires be rebalanced on this machine, otherwise they may use a faster/easier route.

excellent suggestion.

tires alone will not normally cause vibration. I suspect you were thinking of lift-related vibration issues...tires wouldn't cause these types of vibrations.

I haven't had it this bad but there was a time when I had only 1 set of rims and the tires spent their summers off the rims. That next winter they would suck untill they were driven on for a bit and then balanced again. Once I got the second set of rims they seemed to stay true for quite a while, years in fact.
