I'm considering buying a cheap compressor until I can afford one to install under the hood. I'm looking at a Viair 85P and want to make certain that it will work in the 100 series. It apparently pulls 14.5 amps out of the 15 I understand is available in the 100 series. What say the experts on Mud?

I wouldn't buy any compressor that uses the lighter. Get something that clips to the battery like the MV50.

And then you can mod your compressor too! Porting the MV50

My .02 and about all it is worth.... I have a more expensive Vlair 400P. It works great. But knowing what I do now.... and if doing it over... I would save the cash and get the MV50. I would also recommend the same to others. It has a pretty good track record and I have seen it used by others on the same trail run and could not justify the cost difference.

Now, I know it is a little more expensive than the one you linked. But it is a damn good unit for not a lot of cash. So might take a look at it. There is also a thread here someone (cant remember who) installed it under the hood in front of the air box.

Good luck and if you do get and it works out... let us know.

I will say that the MV50 is pretty severely taxed when trying to take a 35 from 15 to 40 x4. You need to do it over a lunch break to give it time to cool. But this is true for any small compressor, not just the MV50. On my list of future mods is to get an ARB Twin.

I bought the 88P and have been really happy with it. I'd say on my 285/75/16s it only takes 3-4 minutes per tire from 15psi to ~38psi which is what I run in the winter. It's pretty quiet, hooks right onto the car battery and has plenty of cord and hose to reach all 4 tires while clipped to the battery. I think I paid $65 for it.
