I'm not familiar with Ipads (or apple for that matter). I'm assuming this has stand alone GPS and can be used to navigate in remote areas via Gaia? Or does it need to be tethered with a GPS unit?

Yes - true stand alone GPS. With Gaia, you’ll download maps via Wi-Fi before you head out on the road/trail.
