Can anyone confirm if what I have heard that the vdj 70 series rear axle housings fit the older hj/fj75 series? If so I guess it would fit hzj/fzj75 s too as the chassis is the same. Don't know much about 76/78 and 79's.

Apparently the diff , hubs and axles from the 75 fit in the much newer, shinier and much more accessible vdj rear axle housing and fits the chassis too. The vdj housing is reinforced too.
Apparently there are quite a few vdj rear axles being swapped out to match the wider front. Which is understandable.
If so, that is ace! Good on toyota for keeping parts the same. And condolences to newer vdj owners..

Hello,

If I remember correctly, the differential size changed from 9 1/2 in. to a slightly smaller size in the early 1990s.

Some measurement is necessary to check whether the parts fit in the older housings.

If surplus newer rear axles are available, it would be worth replacing the whole axle assembly. However, newer axle shafts have five lug studs instead of six. It should be possible to use six-stud axle shafts with some modification.

5 and 6 lug hubs are interchangeable!
Spindle is the key which allows this.
You will normally shave the outer end of CV above snap ring to fit a 6 lug drive flange on a 79 series 5 lug type CV.
Everything is possible. In my case getting parts from the 79's is as simple as walking up to a counter.
Both of these units have 79 series parts.

Way cool to know where , how and what is interchangeable on 70's. I have hzj75 rear springs on my hj75, something like 16mm longer but totally fine. Maybe one day someone would make a big list. Probably up there with what is ace about 70 series. But as you say anything is possible. To me easy and shiny is even better.
