Has anybody done this on their V8 or had the dealer do it?
Anybody that has not done it adn how many miles?
ANybody ever had issues with valves on the V8?

Yes I searched and the only thing that came up was Drexx thinking about doing it (I mean checking his valves :grinpimp: )

My V8 is coming up to 60k soon and the factory recom service shows valve clearance should be checked, looks like a hell of a job though.

I asked about this a while ago and the consensus seems to be "no," not at 60K. It's a big job, as the 2UZ is like the 1FZ/1HZ in that you have to use shims of various thicknesses. My dealer checks the gaps at 60K, as well as a timing belt inspection (ie, remove radiator, timing covers, etc.). Why bother to do all that work and NOT replace the t-belt? Both of those jobs seem totally unnecessary at 60K mi, IMHO. My guess is my dealer does it to pad their profits...$2.4K for their 60K mi service! Makes you wonder what they're smoking! OTOH, I've found their a la carte prices to be very competitive (say you want a ATF replacement). It's the package deals where they rip you off. OTOH, if your vehicle is still under warranty, those myriad "inspections" may not be a bad idea. If they, say, find a leaky CV joint that you might have missed, it'll be replaced under warranty.

Makes sense to me. I was thinking that it will be better to have all that done at 90k miles when the Tbelt needs to be done anyhow. Just take a big bullet then and get lots of stuff done while they are molesting the engine anyhow.

I can't remember ever checking these on a 2uz yet. Rule thumb I use is don't go in unless the covers are leaking and you have to take them off to reseal, you might as well check the clearance then. Or if there is a noise that you suspect might be coming from on of the valves. These engines are amazing. Of the 1UZ (90-99 LS400) and the 2UZ I have only ever seen 1 of these apart from a factory problem. Total of probably 6 apart from outside influence, ie lack of oil or overheating. These engines are one of the most reliable toyota has ever made. Mine personally has 151k and I have never had the valve covers off.
