Is there any special technique to checking the valve clearance with a feeler gauge? On some of mine it seems like a larger gauge will go if I push it hard enough, almost like there's a spring that's being compressed. Would that be the measurement or am I looking for the largest size to go in with minimal effort?

May be because their is a spring.:bang:

I always make sure that the feeler gauge is inserted flat and always use the Goldie Locks method... This one is too big, this one is small and this one is just right.

Ha, thanks. I kind of figured that but I just wanted to be sure. I just got a set of angled feelers to make it easier to insert flat. Hopefully I'm in spec, I really don't feel like pulling camshafts and waiting a couple weeks for shims to arrive.

And then there is the comment about those with a 3FE. "A screwdriver and a 14mm wrench adjusts them just fine. No shims needed."
Almost forgot, "and no feeler gauge needed if you adjust with the motor running".

Woohoo! 180k and all in spec!

I have a 1FZFE. Sorry, should've been specific.

I inhaled while measuring the intake clearances and exhaled while I measured the exhaust clearances.

I do believe that's the correct breathing technique, inhale on intake and exhale on exhaust.

I do believe that proper breathing is an alternative to left/right handed feeler gauges, good job.
