So now that the new torque converter has revitalized the movement of this thing, there's an obvious noise that I started noticing just before I stopped driving this thing. I thought it was from the failing TC since it was in the back of the engine in harmony with the rpms and with a buzzing sound.
The noise is definitely a tick. There's no hesitation, loop, mis, idle is constant (right at 720 rpm), and the tick is still there at higher rpms just harder to hear because everything else is louder.
Kelly might be able to describe it even better, he thought it might be from the rear passenger side valves, not an exhaust leak. I wondered if not driving this thing for so long, and only short quick drives (I'm close to work) may have lead up to this. So last night I added some seafoam stuff while running, everything was nice and warm, then I changed the oil. Let it drain for a nice long time, added a little more, new synthetic & filter, but don't think the noise changed at all. Optimistically I thought it got quieter, but no.
This thing has never had a valve adjustment, ~180k, and of course there's not just a simple kit. I won't know what shims I need until I measure, assuming there's no obvious signs of damage when everything's off. It's labor intensive because so much has to come off, this time a lift won't help
Once again, I need advice, possibly supervision (definitely), and a general direction of where to go from here. I've done some research and reading, and I guess the idea of not knowing till I tear it all apart and start measuring is a little unnerving. Let me know what you think, recommendations on feeler gauges, valve-shim tool vs screwdrivers, and shims are all over the place on cost $3/ to $15/.
