I just brought home a 78 FJ40 from Texas. It has 31,700 miles and a rebuilt 2F engine (stock carb and distributor). When the PO had the engine rebuilt it was desmogged. Pretty much everything related to emissions was removed. I just pulled the carb and cleaned and rebuilt it but every vacuum line under the hood was completely rotted and as I've been looking at different posts most of the lines looked like they were hooked up wrong anyway. I found a great diagram on here for desmogging a 78 but I do't have some of the stuff. What do I actaully need to hook this up right? Thanks

I don't have the BVSV or the VCV shown in this diagram.

Here's a couple of pictures of the engine compartment. There was a line running from the distributor diaphragm (closest to dist) that ran back into the distributor and another line running from the outboard diaphragm over to the 90 deg fitting on the intake manifold seen in the 3rd picture. I have the air cleaner but the PO never used it. Thanks

Fascinating... The accursed PO strikes again.

That is a used 1973-74 F engine, w/ the 2F manifolds and waterpump. It still has the F side cover, valve cover, t-stat housing and alternator bracket. Note how the 2F alternator arm is all the way out in the slot.

Right now the PCV valve is connected correctly. But a source of clean vent air needs to be admitted into the valve cover. Either install a filter right on the valve cover breather port, or run a hose from the VC to the air cleaner breather fitting. But, I doubt that hose can make it from the F VC to the 2F AC fitting. Best fix (Short of installing a correct engine) would be to swap on the more better 2F VC.

On the dissy, the cap vent hose should be connected to the air cleaner.
The retard port is the canister fitting that points up. Just cap it off.
The canister fitting that points forward should be connected to a ported vac fitting on carb base, pointing at valve cover.

Carb choke breaker connects to one of the vac fittings on insulator baseplate.

PS, it would be helpful to see some pics of the carb & aircleaner, to establish what year(s) they are.

HTH and good luck!

Wow that explains a lot and I'm not too surprised knowing the PO. The 40 was in my wife's family and no one could actually tell me what was done when the engine blew. Now I know and have a lot more questions. Here's a couple of pictures of the carb and air filter.

You probably can't tell but do you know if the dissy is from the F or stripped off the 2F? Will the stock air cleaner from a 78 fit on an F from 73 or 74? If not that may partially explain why they never used it. Thanks again.

The dizzy is from the '78.........

The air cleaner works best with the 2F valve cover.....

The basic motor appearance actually resembles a F&1/2....... transition year.....

As Grant said, the dissy is stock 1978 electronic unit.

The 61024 carb is the correct 1978 Federal FJ40.

Air cleaner looks correct also. It bolts to the side of the head, as well as the VC. Another reason to upgrade to the aluminum 2F valve cover.

In the vac line & desmog department:
Consider reinstalling the HIC that is laying on the bench by the carb. It's the boxy thing that goes on the top of the carb, also has clips for the two electrical connectors. It keeps up idle speed when underhood temps get high. The 3 vac fittings can be chopped off, as they are connectors for smog hoses that are long gone on that truck.

The carb temp sensor can be removed & discarded. It was used to control EGR, which is also gone.

Ok next stupid question... If I hook the HIC back up do I run the lines from the dissy and choke breaker through it or not?

No, the HIC is just the little box piece w/ a fitting angled out the top and one straight out the bottom. It connects to the fitting on the air horn and a fitting on the carb insulator.

The rest of the HIC bracket w/ the 3 vacuum pass-throughs can be hacksawed off.
