I have a 1983 HJ 47 with a 12ht engine. I am trying to check if the brake booster is getting enough vacuum. Do you know the function of the component on the picture? There is a hose connected to it coming from the vacuum pump of the alternator and a second hose connected is coming from the brake booster. Thx

Not super familiar with HJ47’s, but it looks like a vacuum reservoir. To test vacuum you’ll want to plumb a vacuum gauge in somewhere between the pump and the booster. Sometimes there is a check valve between the pump and the reservoir, put your gauge in after that.

Pump the brake pedal with your foot, engine not running until it becomes firm. Then, keeping it depressed with your foot, start the engine. If it falls, in my experience it's getting enough vacuum to work reasonably well.

Next, keeping your foot depressed stop the engine, if the pedal stays down for more than 1 minute would also call this satisfactory

Thank you I will give this a try. I now have a stick depressing the brake to get rid of all the air on the brake line if any. Also wondering if this method works? Thanks
