Here again...
I just picked up a small CO2 tank from where i used to work (pub-lots of CO2 and regulators all over the place!!!!) and am planning on using it as a source for air on hj60. But, because its from a pub the thing is nasty- grease and fried food parts all over. I would like to clean and paint the tank but have no idea as to which stickers if any, can be removed- or if its easy/cheap to get the tank re-certified. The tank was in service at the restaurant but the stickers are in shreds. Before I go about wire-wheeling everything off of it I thought I'd ask here.

thanks,
David

All you need is the serial number and the cert date stamped in thre tank. Have it certified as you don't want an blow up in your truck.

Check the hydro testing date on it. Look for the most recent one, they're good for 5 years. Retesting at the place I fill my Co2 takes a couple days and is $25. I had a tank from a soda pop machine that I'd used, wire wheeled it and painted it. When I took it to be filled, they put a new sticker on it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was thinking the certs were good for 10 years. Does it differ based on the type of bottle? Anyone know?

thanks for the help guys. I am going to clean and paint the bottle and have it retested. Seeing as though the tank was in service at the pub, I dont think getting a new sticker will be a problem.

No stickers needed. The hydrotest date is stamped into the metal. Just wash it before taking it for hydrotesting. Wait until it passes before you invest much effort.

Fiber wrapped HPA Nitro/Air bottles must hydrotested every 3 years (some of the newer fiber wrapped cylinders have a 5 year test cycle) with a maximum 15 year usable life span. Aluminum CO2 cylinders 2" in diameter or greater must be hydrotested every 5 years.

One more question:
I got the C02 tank cleaned, painted, and filled, and a buddy gave me a fixed
CO2 regulator (150 psi.). My question is whether or not I can run a regular air compressor adjustable regulator after the fixed CO2 regulator. The output pressure of the fixed regulator is now within the input specs of the air pressure regulator- anything else to worry about? I found adjustable air regulators as cheap as $10.00.

Thanks,
David

The regulator used should be compatible with CO2. One of the problems you will see with a non-CO2 regulator is that it will freeze up when you use it.

Co2 Tank

You may wire brush all the stickers off the cylinder however if there is a registered trademark on the cylinder like Pepsi, Coca Cola, etc be careful. Tanks are about $20.00 to Hydro, some areas cheaper. and easy to certify, the hydro does that. Try itrogen to fill it with, it is cheaper and is much more stable than Co2. Anythi ng I can do if you are local So Cal or West Coast I can help you thru the process, I do about 15 tanks per month. Jim Cowan Rubiconcriser@msn.com

I take mine into Praxair and they give me a new tank every time I fill, I just assumed this is the standard? It's $22 for a 20 lb tank, is there a cheaper way of doing this?

Co2 tanks

Praxair isa ittle pricey fair though, however if you use an aluminum tank you dont want to exchange it, they will jack it from you and thats that..The alum tanks are valuavle, lite and eavy duty..

But you won't get nearly as many fills out of nitrogen. Co2 stores as a liquid in the tank, nitrogen would store as a gas. Unless you've got some nifty way of storing liquid nitrogen, but it would make for fun on the trail.

Well, they just got my Alum tank then those #$%&@ers!!! But I'm not gonna gripe too much, I got it for $5 at a swap meet and it was stamped "Pepsi" so they wouldn't touch it, nobody would. I figured I would take out my own stamp set and put "sold for public use" on it... Well that did the trick! Sweeeeeeet!
